Hi we have just come back from our first major camp.
We noticed that on our site there were 3 tents that somehow attached to the back of peoples cars (one estate one saloon and one people carrier type thing). The folks that did this were the Dutch and the French. What types of tent are they using ? What (if any) are the advantages ? and is this 'normal' practice abroad. Any information would be helpful as both the wife and I are curious.
We would have asked directly but the opportunity never came up.
Thanks

Hi
I've seen a few awnings for cars etc....like these?
http://www.campershop.co.uk/awnings/khyam_tourer/khyam_tourer.htm
I'm sure they are available for other vehicles and someone will have a link.
Cheers DC

There are quite a few tents that attach to the side of cars or even ones that sit on the roofs of vehicles. Mostly seen on Land Rovers etc.
OzTent make quite a selection of tents that can be attached to vehicles - the basic element of which is their "30 second" tent.
Khyam also do some including making Land Rover's branded tents.
The advantages are that generally these sort of tents are very fast to erect and are great for touring. Disadvantages are that they're not huge if you need a large family tent or are staying in one place for more than a few days.

Caranex have been around for a few years although I have not had any experience of them myself. Try www.caranex.co.uk ------------- Peterspal

Also look at stand alone awnings designed for small motorhomes - most of these could be adapted to fit a car over the hatchback.------------- Caz
If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.

I looked at the Caranex for a one night weekend away but thought they were to exspensive for what they are, easier to take our small tent.
