Hello there. A complete novice, I have just joined this site because I have finally been persuaded that taking our children camping would be a good idea! We are a family of five (three small children) and it will be our first foray into camping, and I haven't a clue which tent to look at. We can't afford to spend much (am thinking £100 max if poss) but happy to pick something up second hand from ebay. I would be very grateful for any advice on brands, 'single' or 'second skin'(?!), types of groundsheet, what materials or headroom to look for - and even which brands to steer clear of, etc etc.

Everyone is different..but..I would not want any tent without a FULLY sewn-in groundsheet..No draft or creepy crawleys..Check the headroom in living areas..bedrooms are not as important and from experience listening to other people try and go one bigger than you think you need..sleeps 5 normally means 4..sleeps 6 normally means 5 etc etc!! And enjoy it!!!!! Pete

Hi Kateem

Might be worth posting a request for advice in the 'camping under canvas' section as well.

We too had no idea what tent to get and ended up with a Montana 4 for the two of us. Very pleased.

Would advise going to an outdoor centre to see them already set up. OUtwell also have a video to show you how quickly they can go up.

I would choose one with a sewn in groundsheet and that is easy to set up.

Have a look at Outwell here

Other advice is to get one you can stand up in. Good luck.

PS once you have sort of decided then you can go to Ebay and have a look for bargains.

Hiya

We bought a second hand cheap tent on Ebay about 10 days ago, but after one night out in it we decided it wasn't big enough, wasn't warm enough or waterproof enough! We bit the bullet and bought a new Outwell Georgia XL after going to look at a camping exhibition. I don't think we would have had any clue what to buy without seeing them up and being able to look at the space they provided.

Definately go and look at some up if you can before making a decision.
