Stop worrying Tina , the Maryland is a sturdy tent in the wind , I had mine up and it was blowing a gale down here and hammering it down with rain and i didn't even have the guy ropes attached and it didn't budge an inch .
I know how windy it can get on the I.O.W , Iv'e been over there a few times for the Gurt gallybagger rally (for bikers) , and it is no different than what we get on the pembroke coast line in fact it can be worse over here.
We have not lost a tent, not even in 50mph plus winds (suffered a bit of damage that can be repaird).
Look at it another way even if we lost our tent our two week holiday to Cornwall will still be a lot cheaper than if we stayed in a static caravan for that holiday. So for every holiday taken the cost of the tent repays itself and therefore, from our perspective, if a replacement is needed we will just replace it.
Hope it makes sense.
Cheers

i lost my outwell sunvalley six through simply using it too much. If you go camping enough, the uv rays will eventually destroy your maryland, but trust me, that is a lot of nights under canvas, and if you ever get to the stage that your tent is destroyed by UV damage, I can guarentee that you will have been hankering after a new tent long before it finally goes.

the gurt gallybagger!! now theres something that i havent attended for a few years!!! last time i went was when my eldest (now 17) was a baby, she was a prem and really tiny, but i took her to the bash at atherfield lol!!
the following few years i enjoyed from the bar that i worked (lord palmerston at golden hill fort, sadly no longer !)
now that is ONE rally weekend that i really enjoy (unlike the smaller models that come over roughly the same time and just wind me up!!)

Nope, not in the last five years that we've been back camping and we've camped in some nasty weather.
We pitched our Vango Venture 500 and a Sunncamp dayroom in wind that was so strong I didn't think they would go up - it was only that there was a VV500 already pitched that gave us some comfort! We double pegged everything and added additional guys and straps between the poles to keep everything together and made sure that we checked everything frequently. We ended up with a slightly bent dayroom that had a tendancy to slant after that but it was OK.
Last year (or was it the year before?0 we bent a Cabanon pole pitching in the wind but it bent back with no problems.
The important thing is to peg and guy well, mainly tents go when something fails and that something is often a guy rope that hasn't been used!

I lost my Coleman trailblazer last year in Snowdonia because:
- I wanted to pitch it quickly as it was wet and dark
- I didn't use the guys correctly
- my pegs were rubbish
and I wanted to get my wine and get the fire going!
It stood one night and then it gave up the fight so I learned how NOT to do it. They were VERY strong winds and we didn't heed the warnings. The winds were so strong they blew a metal fire pit into my friend's car and damaged her bumper - the previous evening two of us struggled to lift the pit to move it, so yep they were strong winds!

Whats next ? how many have had a burglar steal their tent out of the shed?.
Its no use to you to worry over what might happen , it might NEVER EVER happen.
I havent to the weather butmy camping buddys got pinches out of her garage! It suddenly appeared 2 years later pitched on a bit of land not 200 yards from her tenfoot!!!!! We found out which of the local yobs was responsible. They were only daft enough to pitch it right on the doorstep of where it was pinched!!!! Me and my friend were stood staring at the tent in disbelief as it was in a mustardy colour with purple and we'd never seen one like it anywhere else!!! Amazingly the police turned up in a riot van within 2 minutes (must have been on cctv lol) when questioned to what we were doing she explained that it was her tent and she had reported it stolen along with tools 2 yrs previous. He wondered how she knew it was hers, said all the campsites we've been to we've never seen another with S**t colours like that! Anyway he radiod back they checked the logs and yes we could take it back!! NO THANKS GOD KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN GOING ON IN THERE. must have been 2 doz empty beer cans, drug needs and allsorts. Was a shame really was a lovely tent and coped with the weather fantastically, and some of the first camping memories with the kids were that tent!!!!!! Sorry for hijacking the thread!

Lots of really friendly people who I think may have missed the point. I lost my frame tent at Highlands end in May 2007. We had heavy winds and the ground was damp, I thought I had done everything right as I considered myself a very experienced camper and we had used the tent a number of times before the wind took it, it was a royal rimini 6 secured with normal round wire pegs, I have posted this on here before but when it go we had lots of help from various other campers which was a great help. We were the last tent left on the campsite by this time all others had the sense to leave early, most of the caravans had taken down their awnings as well as there were a number of them damaged and even a couple of caravans had suffered a little. While assembling the remains of our tent and trying to retain a modicum of dignity while picking up our small from the nearest hedges and fences a caravan owner kindly said " why don't you have one of those awning tie down kits, or the screw in pegs", I can honestly say I didn't jump down his throat with a thanks for the hindsight reaction. The first thing I did when I got home was track down this website and start investigating the options, Delta pegs, thread pegs, awning tie down kit and a massive amount of paranoia are what I use now when I camp. We bought a £1000 Cabanon Aruba and at the same time all the necessary kit to ensure this doesn't happen again, I have no doubt that you have done exactly the right thing by asking the question because I wish I had 3 years ago it would have saved me a lot of panic and a fair amount of money. I also try to make sure that the ground sheet is above the lower fold under flaps and the tent opening faces away from the wind, all tips that I have picked out on these forums, I hope this helps.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
