What are the 3 straight poles for?  I presumed that they went in the holes on the side doors or front porch to make a sun canopy, but cannot work out how to make them stay in place.  Am I totally wrong?

You should have guy ropes that slip over the top of each pole (on top of the canvas) which can be pegged out to hold the canopy.

you are right, they are used for the front porch. You unzip the huge front door and put a pole into each of the 3 holes, one at either side and one in the middle. They are kept taught and upright by using guy ropes, creating a large sun canopy.there should be spare guy ropes in your peg bag. You can just use 2 of the poles to put either of the 2 side doors up as a canopy. Just attach a guy rope to the top of the pole once the pole is inserted into the canopy and then peg the guy rope to the ground at a 45 degree angle pulling it taught.
hope that helps.
