I'm sure this is a silly question but as we are new to camping, we are still very much finding our feet.

How do you keep the door of the porch up so it acts as a canopy?  I know there are poles to lift it but do you then use guy ropes to keep it in position or ?  If so, what do you actually attach the ropes to?  There doesn't seem to be anything obvious!

Yes you use the poles,they have a narrow pin on one end that goes through the eyelets on the canopy,you then loop the guy ropes over the pin and peg out as required.
