Poly tents dont need weathering and it sounds like the person who sold it to you had no idea what they were talking about which is a little worrying considering that they work in a camping store 
I would do a practice pitch and if you feel the urge to wet it and check for leaks then dont fight it but the tent does not need weathering.
And of course a practice pitch will help when it comes to pitching it for real :)
