We've got an Arrow Lake (Outwell) and very happy with it - most people seem to like the outwell poly cotton lake tents, you might want to check them out.
Thanks for both the replies, I liked the aztec for looks and big open front that seemed to be a bit cooler in the hot weather than some tents. I have seen some tents recently where the poles are outside and the tent hangs on these and they look like they may stay in place when you take the tent down. Not a very good description but maybe someone knows what I mean.
I suppose what I want is no leaks and tears , fairley easy to put up , lots of room ,two or more seperate bedroom areas ,etc .Basically something that won't leak in heavy rain.
Thanks Paul

If you can find an Outwell Norfolk Lake, (The big sister to the Arrow Lake) you will have an 8 berth polycotton tent that is versatile for living space, will easily fit on most campsite pitch limits, very sturdy in wind and rain, and much cheaper new than the cbanons or DeWard tents. however, If you can find a really decent quality 2nd hand cabanon, you really cant go wrong!!

The best tent is the one you can afford and gets you and your family camping,I assume you have one if your looking for an 8 birth tent.
Cotton tents are regarded as the best but are a lot more money
Polycottons are again highly regarded
Polyester there are some cracking tents and designs and they are by far the most common tent out there.
The cotton and polycotton tents are quieter in the wind as they don't flap around , they are cooler on hot days and warmer at night , they are darker in the mornings due to the thicker materials , and normally are a lot better to holding up to bad weather . they will last you a lot longer if looked after properly they are safer to cook in (though its always a good idea to have a separate cooking tent).
So comming back to your question is the Norfolk lake better than the Vermont , the answer has got to be NO as both do the same job and will allow you to camp , but the Norfolk lake is made out of better material ,but it will also cost you nearly double the amount of money , some people think the money's worth it some don't I do as I have just bought a Norfolk Lake as well and to me its worth every penny.
As the saying goes you get what you pay for.
A new Norfolk Lake if you can get one will set you back the best part of £900 , secondhand ones are rare but do come up form time to time prices vary but you are still looking at £600 up I would imagine

Thanks very much for all the replies and especially the last one from Pembpitcher which explains the vast difference in cost and why. All the replies have been very helpful and I think I know know that I will go for an Outwell .
The posters above are all very happy with their tents so what better recommendation. I will keep an eye out for the models mentioned and the best prices.
I think buying a tent is just like buying a pair of shoes - make sure you will be comfortable in it and its not too tight a squeeze. And importantly that it keeps out the elements.

Its very easy to think a tent is spacious when you see them in displays empty. But when you start putting all your gear in then they soon feel cramped if you have under estimated on size.
We have an Outwell Sunvalley 6 just for the 2 of us and it just seems right for the amount of gear we have.

There's no doubt that the "Lakes" are all fantastic tents. The NL is the bigger brother of my Trout Lake and they are a versitle and well made peice of kit. Beware however, these babies are very heavy and take up a lot of space in the back of the car.
