I too are part of a family of 4 and looking for our first tent.My advice is to look on the net but get yourself to a shop with a display of tents. It will change your views on many tents you may shortlist via the net.
Totally different thing getting inside a few with so much choice.
I reckon everyone will have different opnions on what is the best etc but its essentially about what you need or want that matters.
One things for sure with so much choice it is a minefield.
I viewed this [url=http://www.camping-intl.com/products/tents/2010-tigris-800/]vango[/url today and seems a good deal at £399 for the package including canopy.Ok its an 8 berth but not too big but enough space. You can remove one of the bedroom pods to make even storage space if you wanted.
Depends on how you like the layouts i suppose ?

Very easy to erect, spacious living area (315cm x 370cm), standing height (225cm), 3 bedroom pods (2+2+4) which can accommodate 75cm wide airbeds (so a genuine 8 berth!) 4 berth pod can be divided with a curtain, you can reomve bedroom pods if you want even more living space!, large windows, good ventilation, doors can be canopied out to form sun porch, SIG (sewn in groundsheet), cable entry point and cable tidy, lantern hooks, storage pockets in bedrooms, fits on a standard pitch (tent measures 750cm x 370cm), 5000HH rating.
You can buy carpet and sun porch to turn it into a real home from home.
Prices seem to be around the £225 mark for 2010 model but if you can find a 2007 or 2008 model then you're looking at around £150-£180 The 2009 model only had 2 x 4 berth pods with dividing curtains which wasn't popular, hence the return to the "old" layout!!
WE recently jbought a Skandika Cario and it's fantastic. 4 Sleeping areas and more than enough room for the 4 of you. It is a designed for 6 people, which will give you even more room.
We have just brought a Wynnster Raven, because of its price mainly (tight budget) but also because we are a family of five (kids are 5,6 and 12). Like you we wanted at least 3 sleeping areas, this gave us 4 (its an 8 berth) with the divider curtains, and a large living area, plus with it being similar to more expensive models (Kyhams) we guessed it would enable us to add things like carpets and canopys at a later date.
we actually got ours for £150 brand new because it didnt have the instructions, but these could be downloaded from the Wynnster website anyway...I am happy to save £50 because a bit of paper, that i could get elsewhere is missing.

thanks i will look at all of the ones that have been mentioned are these massive tents? dont want to be charged extra for a pitch thanks for your advice
There are a few Vango Columbia 600's still available with 2/3 bedrooms, steel poles, 5000HH, SIG, tension band system and enclosed side wet weather entrance. Around £275 at the moment (RRP last year £450). Excellent tent even though being discontinued. You can get the Sungari 600 footprint, canopy and carpet for it if you buy a sage one.
The side porch makes it slightly wider than the standard C&CC club pitch but the discussions on here last year ended up concluding that it was better going for the size of tent and not worrying about the C&CC sites. For non-C&CC sites, the pitch size isn't a problem. It is the bigger tents with pods sticking out the sides that incur higher fees, not these designs. We haven't had a problem ourselves.
