Currently have a Vango Yukon 800 which I'm really happy with, but am looking for a smaller tent for weekend use, and am considering either the Vango Icarus 500 or the Outwell Nevada M. Have read lots of good reviews for both, although the Icarus reviews seem slightly better overall. Can anyone offer any advice?

just had a quick check on prices, I think you could get the vango plus extension with footprint for the same money as the outwell which for me makes it a good chice. But i would be biased cause I have just used mine

Hello Norbert57 and welcome to the forum. First post!!
Which is the better tent? The Nevada M, without a doubt!
Which is the better value? The Icarus.
BUT....dont forget that although the Icarus 500 is ostensibly a 5-berth tent, it is somewhat narrower than the Nevada M (I find this to be the case with several VANGO tents). So, depending on numbers, consider the Icarus 600.
Other things to consider: IMHO you will require a canopy/extension for either of these tents; so budget accordingly. I rather like all the windows that you tend to get with Outwell tents - it makes you feel less trapped/claustrophobic when trapped inside because of the rain (especially useful when you've got kids).
But which ever way you go you've short-listed two good, popular tents.
Thanks floggitt and Former Scout - as you both say, the Icarus seems better value, and I've certainly been very happy with my Yukon 800 which has withstood all manner of weather - thunderstorms, gales, heavy rain etc., and I like the TBS of the Vango. I'm just a little worried about some of the comments I read on here last night about some of the Icarus poles snapping when tent was being erected, owing to perhaps the extra weight of the inner tent (which I understand stays inside the tent when taking it down?). Also some other posts about the rear pole bending hugely (and in one case snapping)during heavy winds - no such prob with my Yukon - so is this a prob with the design of the Icarus in particular or was it possibly incorrectly erected?

The more seams in a tent, the more likely it is to leak. Tents very rarely leak through the flysheet fabric but seams are just rows of holes that have had to be plugged up with sealant. One of the main reasons I don't like Outwells is because of all the windows, sewn in curtains/flyscreens/sewn in this and that.

Hi Norbert,
I believe you may have read one of my posts, but fear not, once erected to Icarus is a damned sturdy tent, and the mishaps you are concerned about are easily prevented, that's why I posted on here.
The bedrooms should, in my opinion, be dropped from their hanging points before you erect/take down your tent, thus making the tent much lighter to raise next time you erect it, I failed to do this & in doing so I probably weakened the pole which later broke.
The broken pole could also have been avoided if I had opened up both doors before taking the tent down, I was also unfortunate enough to time it to coincide with a freak gust of wind.
The tent is great, I would'nt swap it for anything, great for 3 of us for long weekends, etc. I just think maybe the tent instructions could be improved to avoid these problems.
Cheers,
Spiny.
