Can anyone tell me which is correct? To peg ring and pin or peg adjustment strap?

I've never done either, we have been using our Monty for 3 years & its as solid as they come. It already takes long enough to peg everything else.

You peg the rings down so that the tent sides keep in the nice straight line you've so carefully placed them in. Then tighten up the adjustment straps. You may not need to tighten them fully down...try half way, then step back and look at the shape of the pole arc. You don't want it to be so tight that the pole "barrels" out above the ring, which can make inners difficult to fit. You don't need to peg down the end of the straps at the rings.....you need to leave them loose in fact so that you can make adjustments if necessary ie if it gets windy.

If you're pegging down the outer  corners of tents where the corners are further out than the pole sleeves then yes, peg the D-ring and pull the tension straps half way, leaving some slack for later adjustments.

The best pegs for pegging rings are big beefy crook-top pegs, the best pegs for outer corner D-rings are big V-profile ones. Unless the ground is so stoney you need rock pegs of course, but these can be more difficult to fit into the rings.
