Have just got back from torrnetial rain and high winds myself, and we pitched my new POutwell BL6. It didn't move - not even slightly - will withstand anything!
Thanks everyone for the advice. I am now investigating a Sunncamp Vulcan 600. Which apparently has steel poles and is a geodesic design. Does anyone have any advice with regard to this brand and tent?

Check the poles - just had a quick look at one retailer who says that they are PE coated aluminium which won't be as strong as steel.

Hello we have recently been shopping for our second tent & looked at all manner of different tents on local display sites, however a couple of weeks ago while visiting a display on a very windy site one tent stood out head & shoulders above the rest, whilst other tents were flapping & straining in the wind a "coleman mackenzie cabin4" stood rock solid despite being in one of the more exposed positions,We have now purchased one of these from a local dealer-
B & M Camping, near Wellington, Somerset, check out their website, gave us a great deal, our neighbour has also bought a tent from them, excellent people to deal with,
Going away last week of sept to cornwall, will post review of the coleman when we get back,
Poles going crosswise seems to work as a stabaliser and Coleman was recommended to us as good at standing up to harshwinds. I hope I've managed to post a link to a photo of the tent here:
My giddy aunt floggit: looks triffic fun but I'd want to be in my Force Ten or Crux Storm for that rather than the Aruba. The Crux is said to be good up to Force 9 nut i haven't put this to the test?

We've had a Vango Amazon 800 on Shell Island for the last 4 years, 2 weeks at a time along with numerous other tents of all sorts and makes in VERY high winds but the only tent that's not been put in the bin is the steel poled vango. Not cheap but can't be beaten.
My Sunncamp Residence 6 wasbattered in Cornish gales and soaked in torrentiasl rain on a regular basis and was still going fine after 10 years when we sold it last year. If it wasn't for my dodgy back and hubby's glaucoma I would have bought the Europa version.
My Hypercamp Escala 4, a Dutch pyramid tent with over 30 pegging points, sloping sides to deflect the wind, and very stable in stormy weather.
Dutch pyramids are often described as storm tents due to their ability to withstand bad weather conditions.

Inflatables and the Kampa Filey airs are amazing. Our beat performing pole tents this year have been the Kampa croyde range with the new optional storm straps fitted, super strong.

No tent is totaly storm proof . But steel poles or the inflatables are a better option over fibreglass .Our wild country home stead five survived the storm in 2008 that destroyed 95% of tents on shelisland . Our Tipi has stood up to some horrendous batterings over the five years since we bought it but the pole snapped at Newyear in the lakes ( recorded wind of 67mph ) so hardly suprizing . We've replaced the pole a 3 inch diameter wooden pole .
I am contemplating getting an ESVO Bedouin 280 in 2015 to replace my Hypercamp Escala 4 as a 50th birthday present to myself, as it has half the pegging points, SIG and only 5 vertical poles, which should take less time and effort to pitch compared with the Escala 4.
However, I have concerns about its stability in the wind due to lack of horizontal support.
ESVO has assured me that thorough testing had been performed, and the tent stood up to stormy weather like other Dutch pyramids.
