After good advice from this forum helped me narrow down my choices, I am left with these two.
Outwell - will cost more in the end as I will want a canopy, I think. So will end up costing me £300 plus more for footprint. But I want a tent to last for many years and will pay a bit more if the quality is really worth it.
Kampa - better value at £170 with integral front canopy. Reviews here are positive re Kampa as a brand but no actual reviews of this tent. Also hydrostatic head of 4000 vs 3000 for the Outwell.
I am leaning towards the Kampa but can't find anywhere within reasonable travelling distance of NW London where I could go and look at it - so would have to take the punge, sight unseen.
Any views? there is such great advice on this site, it's a fantastic resource for rookies like me.

If you fancied the drive our display at Frensham (GU10 3BP) is easily accessible from London/M3 and you can compare all the Outwells with all the Kampas. The store number is 01252 795 293 if you want to check for specific tents on display but at this time of year they mostly have them all up!
That's helpful - when I looked at their website it didn't look as if the Kampas would be up. But maybe we'll take a drive out there this weekend - thanks
No worries, the Tent Display list will be updated this week but suffice to say that a good selection of tents available on our website will be up at both sites (more at Horsham than Frensham). Over 100 at both...

Except that you won't see an Outwell Virginia at Camping World - it's a Yeomans exclusive. They do have the Wyoming Minnesota which is similar to the Virginia but it's more expensive.
Yes, that's true. Since your post I've updated our list of the main tents on display currently which you can see here. Horsham has just been updated today but Frensham's list will be updated today/tomorrow as it's missing a lot and outdated as this list was last updated in May.
Just to add another to the mix, but within same manufacturers we have a Fistral 4 that is bigger than the Hayling 4 , bedrooms living area and twice the canopy depth, but as one of the ultimate kampa range, costs more than the virginia. However it has both the sleeptite system and a better denier of flysheet so should have a much longer life, so as you say a higher investment for a longer life.
Been really happy with our 2010 model, and the 2011 has ben improved with large windows on the end too

loftus is certainly correct on that one. If you are willing to find the extra cash it is a better tent than either the Virginia or the Hayling. Though better still, in my opinion, is the Frinton - the steel poles give great stability in the wind.
Hmm, don't think my budget would stretch to the Fistral but I'll look at the frinton and the Hayling and decide between them, I think. They'v e both go the 100D flysheet and darker inner tent. Thanks for the advice - much appreciated.
Just to follow up we have now updated that list to cover the display at Frensham as well - both displays correct as of today (but remember tents go up and down on a daily basis)
