Hi all,

Am after a spot of advice. Looking to buy either a Berghaus Lomond or Khyam Freelander but not sure which to choose.

They are as heavy as we want to go and are about the sort of quality / price we're after.

The Berghaus appears to have a sewn in groundsheet and the Khyam does not. I'm not really sure which is preferable... Also, I can't find any size info on the Berghaus. We don't want anything too big - want just enough room for a couple of chairs really and to be able to stand up.

Thanks in advance.
Geoff

We loved our khyam ridgidome XL without a Sig. The bedroom is fully enclosed and a footprint groundsheet does for the 'living' area.

I have a Kyham Freelander. It has the SIG in the bedroom.

Don't know about the Berghaus, but the Freelander is just right for me and my dog. I wouldn't be too sure about a second person in there.

Have you considered a Quechua base seconds 4.1. They are being discontinued and are currently on a promotional price at decathlon.

I cannot find the dimensions of the Berghaus Lomond, so I cannot comment about its size.

Looking at the pics I can find on the web, I would say the living area is quite small, and not as big as the Khyam Freelander.

IMHO, I believe the Khyam Freelander is too small and cosy for 2 people. It is just right for me and my dog, and he is only a smallish Border Terrier.

The bedroom section of the Freelander can take a double blow up bed at an angle, and not much room for much else.

The 2010 Explorer which is a 4-berth tent, is slightly larger than the Freelander, and may be more suitable for 2 people. It is still available from Khyam at the same price as the Freelander! Bargain!!!

Again, like the Freelander, it does not have a SIG, however, the bedroom section is completely enclosed with a SIG.

For a lightweight fibreglass poles tent with the Rapidex system and a SIG, there is the Wayfarer, new for this year. It does not require any additional poles once the main poles are up, unlike the Freelander and Explorer. However, it is more than twice the price at over 400 GBP!!!

For that kind of money, I would get the Chatworth with steel poles and SIG instead. It is a 4-berth and plenty of room for two people.

I have the older and slightly bigger Excelsior XL that does not have a SIG. Again, it is a 4-berth tent, and I would use that when I go camping with another person with the dog.

Lastly, I am a great fan of the Khyam's Rapidex Quick Erect system, as they are a dream to pitch, even though the Excelsior XL is a tad too big to pitch on my own as I am only 5'2! I can easily manage to pitch the Freelander on my own though.

Hope this helps.

I believe our much loved classic Xl is now sold as the Chatworth, mentioned above. Slightly changed design and it now has a SIG. It is the perfect size for two people. I can also recommend the optional annexe. It isn't necessary to be comfortable but the extra space makes the world of difference on a long stay, especially if the weather is bad... and it's the ideal place to keep a luggable loo :)

The reason I like the Quechua 4.1 is because it has the same layout as the classic xl/chatsworth but in pop up form. I have had quechua two second tents for years and they are tough. My children have just done Glastonbury in a Base Seconds set up, no trouble.

Thanks all! A few of these would be too heavy unfortunately. 10kg is seeming like too much aswell, but hey - gotta compromise somewhere!

Cheers,
Geoff
