If you also get a tarp with its own pole, this could serve as a splint pole as suggested. The pole on my Obelink tarp, is actually thicker and better quality than the main pole 
If it gets windy enough to require some extra support for the main pole, the the tarp should probably not be being used any way, so the pole will be available.
