Hi piglet,
Not sure where you are coming from re the groundsheets. Many tents now are either SIG or ZIG which mean you can't erect the tent without the groundsheet. Our Cabanon Biscaya has a ZIG and its such an integral part of the tent its impossible to erect without it.
If you keep the floor well mopped and clean I don't see there is a problem. Attached photo I called " who says camping is roughing it".
The original OP is concerning carbon monoxide poisoning which is really a common sense thing. Don't put any kind of fossil fuel heating (barbeque fuel, log fires etc) anywhere near your tent in the night and there is no problem.
