Can't help you with the pitching instructions, but I wouldn't leave the footprint protruding like that - any water will just go straight onto the bottom of the groundsheet so you would have to pack up with a wet bottom, never a nice feeling!! It does look like the canopy is very snug to the side of the tent, so as long as it is about the same height and you can get the poles up close you should be OK. You may need to put longer straps on to go over the back of your tent too.
