cannot choose between these and unfortunately haven't been able to see either. I currently have a wynnster raven 8 (kyham Ontario 8) that needs replacing and have narrowed it down to these.

Horizon pros

slightly wider.
Have found it cheap.

Horizon cons.

3000 hh
2 windows
No storm straps.

Tigris pros

Tigris has storm straps
4000hh
4 windows
Dark bedrooms

Tigris cons

Slightly narrower.
More expensive

Have I missed anything?

I love my tent now except it doesn't have mesh outer doors. Both of these do.

I camp in whatever the lakeweather usually in the lake district so it does get very wet and occasionally windy.

The size difference isn't really an issue. Think I'm most concerned about the hh difference and the storm straps.

Has anyone seen both of these tents? Does anyone have anything to add to help me choose? Please!

If the size difference is really not an issue, the go for the Tigris... it's only money!

Yes, the car is bigger than the 'van.

Vikki,

I have no experience of either of these tents, so I cannot possibly help in your decision.... suffice to say...

You say there's £130 difference, as if that matters, yet the Tigris is still on your list, so I guess it's within your budget?

You state that the size difference does not concern you.

You list the HH value under Horizon con, but Tigris pro.

You list the number of windows under Horizon con, but Tigris pro.

You list the storm strap situation under Horizon con, but Tigris pro.

You admit to camping in areas, and conditions, that could well prove to come to rely on storm straps.

Now stop wasting time.... go buy your Tigris.... test pitch.... plenty pics..... THEN POST!!!

Both tents get pretty good reviews but weve seen more broken poles on the Horizon and its Hi Gear counterpart than any other brand name tent. Also having been in a few Horizons they do tend to sag a bit once they are up for a few days. The one next to us at the Jubilee weekend I couldnt stand up even in the middle of it after it had been up for a couple of days and it broke a bedroom pole before the end of the week. So personally I would pay the extra and go for the Tigris as its a much nicer tent but along the way I would have a look at the Kampa Pendine 8

Experience enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again

Thanks for your comments.

I've shopped around and it looks like I can get the tent porch carpet and groundaheet for under 350 for horizon and 474 for the tigris. OH likes the sound of the price difference. It would pay for a weeks camping!
I like the look of the pendine but its quite a bit smaller than the tent we have now, which is putting me off.

3 other pros about the Tigris -
  • full length porch, no drips on your feet when you open the door
  • bigger windows (this sold me on the Tigris)
  • excellent Linelok cleats on the guys (but you can fit these after-market)

Having used this tent in windy conditions, I can vouch for its stability.

Like you, I was split between the Horizon 8 and the Tigris 800XL- I am so glad I went for the Tigris.

You are welcome to ask me if you have any specific questions about this tent.
