Hi all

Our tent has developed a bit of mould/mildew on the inside. I can only presume there was some condensation we missed when packing away a few weeks ago.

We've machine washed the inners (30deg C, gentle wash, no spin and and extra rinse)

They've dried now and look ok.

Next up is the tent, it is pitched in a friends garden as ours isn't big enough but I was wondering what the best approach would be?

Would a mild Milton solution sprayed on, gently wiped off and then dried with kitchen roll do?

A friend has some household mould and mildew cleaner, I'm a bit nervous about using that.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Anything with sodium hypochlorite in it will weaken fabric.

I'd brush off as much mildew as possible, then spray on some white vinegar, leave it for a while, then rinse and dry. You could also try lemon juice, borax or some dilute hydrogen peroxide (or peroxide based bleaching agent).

Maybe try all of them and let us know what worked best?

Many people use 10 parts water to 1 part Milton with good results...if it's good enough for babies bottles it's hardly likely to damage a tent.

I personally would steer clear of Mould and Mildew cleaner as they have strong bleach in them.

I would not recommend using different types of cleaners at the same time as Chlorine Gas can be created.

At the end of the day very strong sunlight is good for killing mould spores and also acts as a mild bleach for the spots left behind. You can't avoid getting some mould and other spots (bird poo etc.) on tents unfortunately and providing it is not stinking or looking very bad I wouldn't worry too much...shows it's been well used.

Hi All

Just to update, a 10/1 Milton wash was used along with a good scrub.

Decided not to worry about the above affective the waterproofing so applied a good coat of fabsil to the whole tent.

Camping next weekend so will probably get to test the waterproofing!

Cheers
