Hi All

Not sure what army it was ( presumably British). Back when I was in the boy scouts ( around 30 years ago). Our club had a unique set of Army tents. Each tent consisted of 2 parkas which could be buttoned together to form a triangular tent ( poles, pegs & guide lines came in a small separate bag). Have been trying to trace a set or photos on the internet but I can't seem to find anything.

Anyone out there knows what i'm talking about ? if yes, is there a specific name for these tents?

We had ponchos which were capes with a hood and when opened out and laid flat were about 6 foot x 4 or 5 foot. These were British Army.

They had eyelets which allowed them to be buttoned up to form a waterproof cape with hood but two could be tied together to form a small ridge tent or could be draped from a wall to form a shelter. Poles and pegs would be sticks gathered from around.

Thanks Navver. Did some more research yesterday. It seems they were a version of a pup tent. I do vividly remember that they were parkas, and like you said, two could be linked together to make a small ridge tent.

I also remember that they had wooden toggles and loops (not buttons). The sets we had came with poles, pegs and guidelines, but I cannot state 100% that these came with the parkas as standard or were added later.

Forgot to mention that this was back in my home country of Malta, and considering that we were part of the commonwealth until late 60's. It does make sense that they were British.

I’ve still got one. Mine’s is a poncho, rectangular, it poppers up the sides if you’re wearing it. I used it over my rucksack when I was back packing in wet weather to keep it dry. And I used it as a tarp at the tent door (with the hood facing down so it didn’t gather water) using the eyelets to peg it down with pegs or using guys.

I'm afraid these were different than what you are describing. Can be barely seen in the photo I linked. But they would button together face to face. Meaning buttons/toggles of one parka would go into the holes/loops of the opposing parka and vice versa.
