The number needed is always one more than you have.

I have mentioned before - keep a variety of pegs so that all types of grounds are covered.

My go-to pegs when I was a tenter were Deltapegs in nylon. However, they were not suitable for very hard grounds or hardstanding pitches.

I still use Deltapegs on grass for my wind-out awning and an additional shade.

Same here - still using my delta pegs for the awning storm straps and main guy ropes, some decent normal steel pegs for all other pegging plus a half dozen rock pegs "just in case". And of course a steel mallet.

I used normal delta pegs and the rock delta pegs. I am not sure if they are still available, I think they may have been a trial by Rob Orr

My Outwell tent came with the standard Outwell 'glow in the dark' plastic pegs - hopeless on most pitches, they bend and collapse far too easily - avoid, don't consider buying just because that's what came with the tent originally!

After many years of camping and latterly caravanning with an awning, the ONLY pegs that I carry these days are ROCK PEGS! I can't be asked to assess what the pitch is compatible with and choosing from a selection of different types, Rock Pegs will work! Only exception is a few plastic mushroom head types for pegging footprint under SIG, where you really don't want protruding heads.

ALLWAYS carry 25% more pegs than you actually need, as you WILL bend some (usually possible to straighten if/when you have a suitable surface to hammer them on, but that's rarely on pitch, and a task for home!), and inevitably at least temporarily 'loose' some in the grass, so a surplus will ensure you have enough to properly peg out. And if on soft ground where the pegs pull out easily, two or even 3 pegs driven in at angles to each other normally ensures a secure anchorage. Just enough pegs to match pegging points is NEVER enough pegs!

Don't mess about, smallish Club hammer to drive in, short pry bar to extract. A GOOD carpenters claw hammer is a half decent substitute.

As to how many pegs needed, not a clue! Unpack tent, lay out flat, count the guy ropes and pegging points, add 5 to cover any you missed, and there you go. With your 25% extra, you're all covered. Don't forget all the little 'odd' ones like the footprint mushroom heads, and any needed to peg down flappy bits that lead into porch areas etc.

Sorted.

Dorothy, Rob's widow, decided to continue with his work, and found suitable suppliers to make the stainless steel items, and have extended their product range - they even have a bag for Deltas now in case anyone is interested.

When I switched unit to a van, I did not sell any of the pegs as they were still needed for putting up awnings and canopies.

I needed to add to my peg collection some screwed in pegs for hardstanding when I needed to put up a windbreak, and bought a better drill for them.
