Hi.

Am looking for suggestions for a 3 person, small packing tent for motocamping.

Need to be self standing as when in Europe last year for a festival, the ground was like ROCK so needs to be able to stand up by itself, as well as can do if that makes sense just without any flappy vestibule etc.

A vestibule area would be nice.

I have been looking at the Mongar 3. Any other ideas please?

Cheers.

Khyam recently went into liquidation, but I understand all the liquidated stock has been purchased by another company. Google does bring up a site.

They offer quick erect self standing tents, we had one for close to 30 years, the quick lock system never failed, but after so much hammer the fabric was UV affected so we had to discard it.

They do a couple of 3 person quick erect tents which are self standing. You just need to check weight and pack size if using for motorbike touring.

An alternative brand which uses the same quick lock system is Outdoor Revolution.

You're setting yourself a tough task in a couple of ways!

Dome style tents will generally be self supporting, BUT without pegging, they are likely to blow away in a breeze like tumbleweed! If you only peg the basic tent (SIG, corners etc.) without guy ropes, it won't have much resistance to even light winds, and risks sufficient distortion to cause damage to poles and flysheet! Guy ropes give a tent robustness that it otherwise simply wouldn't have.

Tunnel style tents are a non-starter! They rely entirely on guy ropes/pegging to keep the poled hoops upright, and the SIG in the correct footprint layout!

Even with a dome tent with a vestibule/porch area, it's quite typical that the vestibule bit is in effect a tunnel construction relying on guy ropes to keep it erected!

Airbeam 'dome style' tents can be self supporting, maybe slightly better than similar poled ones, BUT once again, inclined to blow away if not anchored, and the airbeams can collapse inwards if not guyed. Relative to a near identical poled tent, Airbeam versions are heavy, bulky and more expensive!

I've certainly camped on sites with 'grass' like concrete, where even hefty rock pegs struggle!
Two 'solutions' I've used that often make life easier:
1) wet the ground with water where you want to peg, leave a few minutes to soak, AND use Rock Pegs. Wet the ground again when extracting pegs.
2) a battery power drill and masonry drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the peg. Drill a hole where you want to put a peg, and again use Rock Pegs.
They allow you to use tents 'normally', all properly pegged out.

I've certainly been lazy, and only pegged at minimal points to ensure secure and robust against very light winds, but NEVER contemplated completely unpegged! I'd be very interested to see if you find a suitable tent to meet your wishes.
