Many thanks, we have been looking up the various railways and links for places that have been posted. It has all been really helpful to plan our days, we go on Saturday, can't wait!

If you want the railways, a couple of suggestions:
The Corris at Corris is short but they are very friendly and the coffee isn't bad in the Museum and Cafe.
The Welshpool and Llanfair is best caught in Welshpool, then have a walk around Llanfair before coming back
The Talyllyn is a good day out. Catch it at the top, inland end from Newtown, and then go down to Towyn.
The Vale of Rheidol from Aberystyth is expensive, but the walk around the Falls at the top is good, but be warned the steps are VERY steep.
Further away you have the Festiniog from BF to Portmadog, plus the Welsh Highland and the Welsh Highland Heritage in Portmadog.
On the coast is the Fairbourne Railway. A good trip there is take the railway to the point, then the ferry to Barmouth then either walk back across the "big" railway bridge or even catch the train.
The "big" railway from Newtown to Machynlleth then either up the coast to Pwllheli, or down to Aberystwyth is a great trip. Up the coast is very scenic.

OH dear, wish I'd seen this thread earlier - if you like walks then I would have recommended Gregynog Hall near Tregynon (7 miles from Newtown). Absolutely stunning house with amazing grounds and walks.

Hope you had a great time here x

Hello all,

Well we're back and what a lovely area Mid-wales is! Everyone was just so friendly and chatty and helpful. The Elan valley was just beautiful and we enjoyed the trail along the old railway line. Also enjoyed pottering on the shores of Llyn Gwnnog (sp?!) and loved the Welshpool/Llanfair railway. We were staying right next to a small lake and spotted kingfishers, dippers, a heron and one morning, saw the otter. We bought rods and taught ourselves to fish, with no results! Newtown is a pretty place, with everything you could need. Thanks again, we will be going back.

Glad you enjoyed your holiday, the views, walks etc around this area are amazing. Did you see the red kites?

In my last post, I had only a couple of minutes to recall our best memories, but there was so much I could have written about in our time in Wales, I thought I would bore people!!

We saw the red kites at Grigin Farm. All visitors need to be patient as although the feed is delivered at 3pm, the kites wait until the crows decide to feed and then they descend..it is worth waiting for!

We had some campers last week who had to wait an hour, but they did enjoy when they arrived

We probably waited an hour too, but then there were about 30 or 40 of them, coming down in drifts. We preferred standing on the higher field watching them approaching and diving, than in the hides which looked a bit cramped!

The reviews of your CL are great, will definitely remember it when we return to the area, as we thought we'd rather be nearer the Elan Valley next time.

The hides can be cramped, and I wouldn't advise if you have little children as they get bored waiting and there are some serious bird watchers in there which look a bit fierce if kids make a noise. Your better outside.
