I work in York (how lucky am I!!!) - there's so much to do. A colleague and I sometimes take a packed lunch on the red boat trip to get us out of the office at lunchtime (in summer!) - not cheap, but very pleasant. However, unless it doesn't rain between now and your visit you will be very lucky to find the boats operating - the river is very high and they can't get under the bridges!
Personally, I love Jorvick and can spend hours in there, but I'm a supressed archeologist, so even the very first exhibit (a reconstruction of the site when they uncovered it, under a glass floor so you can walk all over it and see how things were found) can keep be occupied for a ridiculously long time!!
Have a great time - York is a beautiful city.
Fingers crossed the river does not rise further. It would be nice to do the red boat trip. Will need to extend our trip I think Either that or return in the warmer months. Plenty for us to see and do

Hi Krazykamper, I used to live and work in York. As well as the Minster there are lots of beautiful medieval churches - my favourites were Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, All Saints, North Street and All Saints, Pavement. (Pavement is the name of a street - York is famous for streets with odd names). Unlike the Minster, they're free to enter!
The kids might enjoy a visit to Clifford's Tower, a ruined castle with a gory history, right in the city centre. The small Richard the Third museum is interesting, especially its location - inside Monk Bar, one of York's famous old gates.
And who could resist the Lloyd's Bank Turd - yes, really! It's the largest example of fossilised human poo ever found and is in the Jorvik Centre! Google it for more info.

If you have the opportunity, go to the Minster at 5 ish (check their website) for Evensong...it is truly beautiful. the Minster choir have the most amazing 'Counter tenors'.
I was brought up in a village nr York so I know it backwards
Castle Howard is also worth squint if you are in the vicinity.
the best way to enjoy York is on foot, so Park & Ride if you can.
