Well done Josh, that's a cracker of a fish for a first session.
Beats my first ever fish on a rod and line: a 2 ounce dace from the river Severn.
Caddyclan, I have to warn you - angling is very addictive, as you may already realise now that hubby wants to join in. It certainly was for me! Forty-plus years on and I'm still at it, as you can see look here
The other bonus is that once you've the basic equipment it need not be an expensive hobby/pastime - unless he ends up on the match circuit of course, and if he does - who knows, you may have a future World Champion on your hands!!!
Josh has done very very well for his first time out catching a beautiful fish like that especially in this weather. There have been a lot of times I would love to get a nice fish like that. I have gone out on numerous occasions and come back with nothing. You must tell him that he won't always catch, but that is one of the joys of fishing. Saying that there is always something going on on the bank. One of the nicest things that happened to me was when 2 kingfishers landed one on each of my rods.
Yes, that's another advantage of fishing. While you're sat quietly at the side of a lake or river the wildlife comes to you. An excellent education for a young person (or an old one for that matter).
Water voles, dragon flies, kingfishers, butterflies...even foxes and badgers occasionally pay you a visit and you get to see them close up in their natural environment. Some of them (especially water voles) are so cheeky they will try to grab your bait out of the bait box under your feet.

...Sometimes you've got to be a bit careful about your 'fishing neighbours' though... I was sitting enjoying the morning sun, whilst fishing a big gravel pit in Suffolk a few years back. Looked around and noticed an Adder was 'basking' in the sun too, about four feet away!... I sat watching it for about ten minutes, before it slid off into the undergrowth... They usually avoid us, but in this case I think she was using a favourite 'warming place' and hadn't noticed I was there... Like all anglers, it was a 'glimpse of nature' we often get, that others aren't so lucky to see...
Thanks for all your support guys, he had gone to bed one happy chap tonight. By 9pm he was absolutely knackered (all that good fresh air) and crawled up to bed.
You were asking where the 'tiddler' was....well it was his first, and here it is....
Told you it was a tiddler LOL.
Incidentally the box he's sitting on belongs to the person who was coaching him - we've not decided to shell out on things like that yet!!!

Well done Josh, keep at it mate.
WOW those are some impressive fish photos you have there. I see you're in Redditch....where abouts do you go camping, assuming that you combine camping with fishing? We are trying to find someplace relatively nearby (within a couple of hours drive from Llanidloes, Powys) to camp & fish next May. Any ideas?

Well, considering it looks like it was pouring with rain when he caught the tiddler and it still didn't put him off, I think he is well and truly hooked.
He may need a tackle box of some description but those you sit on don't half make your back ache after awhile...one of your camping chairs would be much better
It's bad enough battling with an eel, Andy...not sure I would want to share my swim with an adder!!
Hi Caddyclan, sorry I can't help you with places to fish within the area you're asking about, I'm usually on the Warwickshire Avon or local canals these days and don't travel far. Besides which, I'm not into carp fishing which is what you will find at most campsites that provide fishing facilities (nothing against carp, just not my cup of tea these days). Use the 'camp site search' button at the top of the page and enter the search criteria you're looking for.
Now then... Camping and fishing? With the missus? I have to tread very carefully there! LOL. When we're not camping then I'm usually on the riverbank with my mate every weekend. So you can see I know which side my bread's buttered as regards taking loads of tackle when I take the missus camping. But, in saying that, there's one site on the river Teme that we visit and I just take one rod and reel for a little dabble there.
We camp all over the place but some of my favourite sites are in Powys, and they're all less than a couple of hours away.
It's a pity we're so far apart because over the years I've built up a slight excess of tackle which is now filling up my shed and I could have helped Josh with a few bits and bobs... at one point I even had 14 spare rods and six spare reels sat in there doing nothing. There's a few special bits of tackle for 'Grandad's Little Angler' for when he gets a bit older - at three-years-old he's still a little too young to get started - and then boy are we going to have some fun!
I've been involved with a few angling clubs and one thing that has been noticable at all of them is the lack of youngsters taking up the sport compared to 20 to 30 years ago. So, it's especially nice for me to see some like Josh getting involved and good to know that there are still the facilities for him to do so.
I've rambled like an old fisherman telling his tales so I'll shut it now.
P.S. Did I ever tell you about the one that got away?
Sorry, this idea might be a bit late but if you want to add to your equipment I would try your local "Freecyle". I had seen fishing equipment advertised on my local one a little while ago.
Well done Josh!!
