We are off to Northumberland next week for the first time. We will be based in Wooler for 6 nights and want to make sure we get the most out of the holiday. For those people who know the area well, what would you say are the top "must see" places to visit??
Alnwick Castle is very expensive - Cragside is a good one for all ages and great beach at Druridge Bay - worth joining the National Trust as there is Cragside, Wallington, Lindisfarne Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle, Gibside, Cherryburn, Souter Lighthouse and others in the area to visit.
There was a similar thread to this a few months ago but I can't seem to find it. As others have said head for the coast on a fine day for some of the best beaches in the country.
We stayed at Highburn House camp site in Wooler a few years ago and walked this route. There are great views on a clear day, have a look further down the attached website and there are suggestions for places to visit near to Wooler.
Just noticed we have a few photos on our homepage of our stay in Wooler, the ones with a hill in the background is the hill fort, some others are of us on top of it looking back towards the camp site.
Thanks for the advice. We are staying at Highburn ourselves - how did you find it?
We are members of the NT so will make use of our membership by the sound of it! We also have some "days out" vouchers from Tesco which can be used at Alnwick castle.
We enjoyed our stay but it was very busy, there was a vintage motor cycle rally on the weekend we went and the tents were very crammed to say the least. Its been 4yrs since we went, have a look at the campsite search facility on here as someone will have reviewed the site more recently.
We've just got back today ; didn't want to come home !
We go every year , and if staying a few days we get a week long parking permit ; it's £11 this year . Saves having to have change for parking , and can be used at most of the car parks .
We've just got back too & I must recommend the butchers shop in Bamburgh if you get there at all - it has the BEST pies ever....Kielder was also good to visit, depends what you like but we loved the art around the lake (you can get a leaflet showing locations) & my family usually scoff at stuff like that.
Forgot to mention Barter Books in Alnwick if you get near that area. Usually I'm a bit squeamish about 2nd hand bookshops but this is another matter. It's an amazing place, children will love it & the selection of books will keep you busy for hours, particularly on a rainy day.

Love the place ! Fresh coffee and great biscuits ! Dogs welcome !
We went there for the first time this year, stunning. There was so much to do that we will just have to go back next year.
We went to see Chillingham Castle one of the most haunted place in Britain supposedly and next door to the Wild cattle mentioned in earlier post but both were closed on Saturday and it was quite a long drive there - just a warning. Worth checking the opening times of places as NT can be shut on Mondays.
Cragside was very interesting and Keilder water was just beautiful. We loved Lindisfarne and waited at the end of the causeway as the water lapped over the road.
There seems to be a castle on every turn. Best of all were the beaches, just miles and miles of sand and space.
We also liked the wall walk at Berwick, very different to other wall walks we have done.
If you get to Craster where the kippers come from, try one of the kipper in a bun from the friendly stall in the car park. Yummy and even Gordon Ramsay was impressed. See date 13.6.08 in visitor page in link below:
