Hi,

Planning ahead for the summer half term, hoping the weather is good!

Would like some opinions and advice on how the walk / climb is from Wasdale Head up to the top of Scafell Pike. I am fit enough and so is my son (13yrs), but we are walkers with good footwear and clothing, plus an OS map and some sense in looking at weather and asking local forecasts etc. We are not mountain goats who would be happy with being on the precipice of a cliff...

Advice please... I know there are guided tours up too, but would like to do it on our own.

Thankyou.

Fi

It is pretty straight forward and easy. Although the first time I went up, I left the campsite and went up the scree to the col between scafell and scafell pike. It was easier going up a ridge called lingmell the second time, and I think this is the usual route.

The quickest and most straightforward way up from Wasdale Head is to follow the path alongside Lingmell Gill, up Brown Tongue to Hollow Stones and then up to Mickledore (the gap that seperates Scafell Pike from Scafell). A left turn here will take you to the summit of Scafell Pike. That's the qickest way, it's also the most boring and it's a bit of a slog to boot.
In my opinion the best way up from here is to follow the path alongside Lingmell Beck (not Gill) to Sty Head and then pick up the path known as the Corridor Route. This leads along a shelf that runs below the main ridge and is very easy to follow and much more interesting than than the grind up Brown Tongue. On the way down you can take in the summit of Lingmell and then follow the broad grassy ridge back to Wasdale Head.
I've added a route profile and a map to give you an idea.
