I usually holiday in the North of Scotland or one of the Islands and as everyone knows the scenery is outstanding, fabulous mountain ranges as far as the eye can see. So its a constant frustration to look at the hills and not know what they're called, road maps aren't detailed enough and OS maps cover too small an area and are expensive.
Is there an app which allows you to point at a mountain and it'll tell you its name? I don't think its too daft a question, surely its possible as the phone has GPS and a compass, and if its possible someone will have thought of it.
Also, can anyone recommend a similar app for star constillations ?
Thanks, Liz

cant really answer the one for the mountains, maybe Google earth is terrain settings, but Google earth has a star settings where you can point to the location where you are then click to sky mode and it will show you the constellations above where you are at the time, am sure some one will be along shortly to give better info shortly
just found an android app called
Google Sky Map.apk maybe you can get it for the iphone

Hi, I don't know if this will be any help but there is an app For iPhone called hill lists. I have it on my iPad and it is a great app. It gives you all the main hills and mountains in the uk. It doesn't have the facility to give you info on a Hill that you would point to but if you go to the map it will give you the hills in the area and I suppose you could find the hill from that. Also gives you the latitude etc and height and there is usually a link that will take you online for more info. A great app. Sky chart you do point at the sky, another great app.
Google Goggles works on landmarks but I don't know about scenery.

I use an iphone, my one is the 3gs, i use digi maps from O/S and put them on an App from memory map. I have the whole of the UK on my pc and load the section of map i'm visiting onto my iphone. Its fantastic, but not cheap. The app was £9.99 and the maps cost £200. I think you can get some free maps or just buy the section your visiting.
As for star gazing etc i use two Apps one App is called starmap pro and the other is called Planets. The starmap pro was about £11 but it is the pro.. The planets App is free and to be honest i use it more it's a fantastic App and much better than most and very easy to use.
