Hi there, the missus and me are camping near Beaumaris for a few days soon. I wondered what we should do and where to go, we love to walk and of course if there are pubs on route thats a bonus.... Any suggestions ?
I also quite fancy doing a bit of fishing off the beach, nothing fancy just a cheap rod with a spinner, whats the likelyhood of me catching mackrel using a spinner ?
Anglesey is a really nice place to walk, I did the Coastal Path in May 2010 and had a great time. I wouldn't recommend tackling that though since its 125 miles
Seriously though I'm sure there's plenty of circular walks in that corner of the island, or you could take the coastal path down to Penmon Priory and just beyond it get a view of Puffin Island. Watch out for the tides on the official coastal path though because it goes right along the beach for a section. I got cut off by them and was lucky that a builder allowed me to go through the grounds of a private property he was working on.
If you're happy to go a bit further afield for walks there's a nice coastal walk between Menai bridge (the town) and finishes just shy of Llanfair, passing under the two bridges across the strait. Around the Llanfair area there's the train station and Plas Newydd. There's also a statue to the Marquis of Anglesey (second in command at Waterloo) who owned Plas Newydd. You can climb this and get great views over the strait. In the other direction there's some nice coastal walking along the bays too.
Beaumaris has a castle obviously and I think it has a jail (it certainly used to but every time I've been there it was shut). Its not a terribly big place but it does have a few pubs, a pharmacy, a couple of newsagents and one or two other shops.
I don't really know much about fishing but there's plenty of nice pubs in the area. I especially like the Antelope but that's on the mainland side of the Telford Bridge. Nice food and decent prices there though so worth a trip.
Head south from Beaumaris on the A4080 past Plas Newydd (National Trust) and go to Newborough. There's a conservation area, £3 to park. there are walks through the pine forest & sandunes. Lovely area.
plenty of mackeral about, you should catch them with a piece of string and hook.South stack, near Holyhead is worth a look,LIghthouse to go up,half way up the mountain, walk to the top of that.Rhosneigr is good if you fancy surfing.lots of castles to see.Go for a day trip to Ireland.Hopefully you will get some sun,but dont bank on it.Bring plenty of clothing, jumpers, coats,as it will be windy
Car boot sales, if you like them, a big one on Sundays at the A5 at the Anglesey Showground just before the village of Gwalchmai, and a strange one on Tuesdays at Valley (the village, not the RAF station), if you go there you will see it signed. Rhoscolyn on Holy Island has lovely back to back beaches and a good walk up to the old coastguard station. Parking there (free) should be ok once school holidays are over. There is a pub (the Eagle I think) on the way there which has a lovely outside terrace.
Thanks paul for putting a photo of your extention to your Gobi 4 on here,i have just bought a Gobi 4 a few weeks ago and had a few days away in it.The only problem i found was that when it rained and you unzip the door 'the rain came inside off the door into the tent as the door slopes inwards.i looked at you photo of yours and i saw you got a zenobia extention for it.so i went out and got one from go outdoors and fitted it.Absolutely brilliant. Thanks to your idea its solved a problem now.cheers paul. Marc
I Bought the zenobia extention, & just been away for 2 , was great , think i will buy a groundsheet & use some self adhesive velcro to keep it in place but was classs to have the extra room many thanks
You can fish off the Breakwater at Holyhead, where you can catch mackeral a plenty - you also have people fishing off the cob - A5 betweeen Valley and Holyhead as long as the tide is in.
If you like walking there is Holyhead mountain which offers lovely views and on a cracking day you can see the Wicklow Mountains and the Isle of Man.
Do you have little ones? As there is Pili Palas (butterflies), Foel Farm Park, Sea Zoo, Tachla Taid (yesteryear cars), Model Village, Cartio Mon (go karting) Llynnon Mill ( not sure if this is open at this time of year)
Lots of nice beaches - Rhosneigor, Trearddur Bay, Red Wharf Bay, Newborough, Silver Bay, Rhoscolyn.
Inland sea for coneing - Stanley Embankment for the expert playboaters!!
You do need the weather for most activities but our little island has lots to offer!!
------------- Degsy Rowlands is my love, my life and a lunatic!!!!!!!! Louise x
There is a another little Norman castle further up the coast from Beaumaris, which is quite nice. The castle itself isn't particularly impressive compared to Beaumaris but it is a really nice walk, there is also an abbey ruin there which is something to visit at the same time!
Hi. I'm a newbie here and just found your post. Its too late for your trip but if you visit Anglesey again, a great website for fishermen is www.seafishingvenues.net. It covers most of the venues in Anglesey with details on parking, bait etc.
