Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience with these type of bike carriers (priced at at £60)? Thinking of buying one as don't want the rigmarole/expense of a low-mount carrier with the tailboard/electric connections kerfuffle...

Thanks.

Hi, we have one but not from Halfords. We are happy with it.I have a paint mark across all the locking points so I can store it flat, & open it to the correct position for my car easily.

The only small down side I have found is a small increase in fuel consumption.

All the best,

andy

The last Halford's cycle carrier (high) we had ... last year ... left some marking from straps and lower hooks ... and ... it came off, with three bikes on ... whilst driving (luckily very slowly) ... hit a small hole in the road at night ... damage to two of the bikes meant new wheels etc ... I've carried bikes for years and the carrier was correctly fitted and loaded.
These racks are probably fine 95% of the time ... but are you going to gamble on being one of the 5%?
I changed to a MaxxRaxx this year .... joy!
Best I've ever had ... it'll last the rest of my life!

Don't have a tow bar for a Maxx Raxx to fit onto, and have stated that I don't want the expense of electrical fittings/lightboard- hence a high-mount. Besides, nothing is ever 100% safe- regardless of the prior precautions taken. Accidents happen.

Thanks for all the input so far folks

I've got that style of bike carrier and I'm happy with it, it's easy to put it on wrong so fit it before you need it and take your time making sure you have it right.

Understand PJ ... though a lightboard cost me the princely sum of £12.
But, yes, the tow bar is a necessity.
By the way ... after the Halfords one came off (and was bent beyond repair), I got a replacement carrier from a French Supermarket for 20 Euros in a sale ... it was smaller, but managed our three bikes with ease.
Main reason for changing was the MaxxRaxx's ability to load bikes on very safely and tow at the same time ... and being able to open the car's rear door without having to take the bikes and carrier off.

Do Halfords give you a demo on rigging it up? Or am I thinking of someone else entirely?

This just in from the PJ Newsdesk.....

Went to Halfords today to find out that none of their high-mount carriers fit my car (Kia C'eed) so we ended up spending a fun 3 hours in the blazing sunshine fitting the roof bars and 2 roof mounted cycle carriers we eventually purchased to said motor. It was worth it in the end, though- had a lovely couple of circuits of the nearby Leybourne Lakes this evening

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice- I'm most grateful.

Hi, We looked at the one from Halfords and it looks ok but eventually bought one from Micksgarage.co.uk    It cost a bit more but is far superior and looks like it will last. Very sturdy and secure in use. A good tip is to fit the rack to your car, offer  your bike up to the rack, and where they will touch, wrap some padding around the rack and cover tightly with some silver tape.
