Hi

I am student at Bournemouth University studying BA(Hons) Product Design. I am looking into designing a pannier bag and tent combo kit for cycling holidays. The main idea was a solo tent and pannier bag for single person holidays/ group holidays but sleep in a single tent. I was just wondering who my market was really and I thought it was a good place to start on these forums. I was just wondering about ages of people who go on these solo holidays with their bicycle. Also if people go as groups. If anyone could also push me in the right direction it would be really appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Look up the CTC (cyclist touring club). or to a lesser extent Audax UK.

That is your market and you may well get some feedback from CTC if you email them

Edit:

Also you could try the cyclechat forums. It is quite a large forum but a little friendlier than the main one Bike Radar.

Have you thought about approaching local bike shops, also pannier manufacturers may be an idea ortlieb?

Good luck

Im trying to think of how combining a tent with a pannier would work . The problems I see are panniers may be bought for touring holidays but get used for general daily life the commute to work shopping day trips etc . Then there's the practicality of loading a bike . A conventional pannier set up allows for the best weight distribution . And a separate tent can be split and spread around if needed . Its kind of like the tent that uses the bike as a support instead of poles . Sounds good till your sleeping next to a crud cover dripping bike or your on a site and need your bike .
Just so you know I'm a life long cyclist from racing to club rides commuting to a 3 year 20000 mile trip round the world ( 97 to 99)
Rob .

Thanks for the info guys. The project is a set brief by Gelert it is mainly focused on the solo tent. It was to make a 'combo' idea with the 2. The main point I was looking into was balance. But also thinking: how people get to the start of the trip ie train, car? and many other qustions similar to the who?what?where? nature. Thanks for your help again.
