As It was a nice Dry Bright Sunny Day
We Went to higher Poynton Cheshire
To walk on the Macclesfield canal
From Lord Vernon Wharf
Onto the Towpath going South traversing pools of muddy water from all the recent rainfall going South .
To the East ,With lovely Views of Lyme Park
And the hills of the Gritstone Trail
along the Towpath Upto Lyme Green Marina
To See all the Unusual names on the moored Canal boats .
A nice place to stop and take in the view.
Onwards to Booths Green ,Wood lane
Over a bridge
To turn off from the Canal and head back North
To Return Via The Middlewood Trail
(Old Disused Railway Line) lots of walkers and Cyclists on the trail .
Then up past Poynton Coppice Woods paths and trails .
And Return to The (Old Poynton Rail Station)
And Back upto Nelson Pits Visiting centre .
" A Grand Day Out "
Sounds good! Thanks for setting out your route.
I used to know Lyme Park very well, when I lived on edge of Manchester (long long ago) & drove a very rusty Renault 4 with dashboard gear stick.
We too used to live not far from Lyme Park.
Pleased to see you're using the name we all know it by, and not just Lyme, as the NT seems to insist on calling it now.
Thank you Fiona W
Glad It brought back Memories of Lyme Park .
And Greater Manchester .
As I know all of these Areas
very well .
Since I was a Lad .
Me and My friends First Travelled on the Old Steam Train
On the Middlewood Trail
And Got off at the Old British Rail Poynton Station .
In The Sixties
And remember using the Chemical Toilets .
Lol
" Oh Happy Days
I'm local to Leeds end of the Leeds Liverpool canal and it can't be beaten for a walk. Always something to see, plenty of wildlife, chat to boaters, help with locks.
There are rail stations all the way along the West Yorkshire section, so when I've done enough I can hop on a train and get back home.
Over the years I've done the whole route between Gargrave and Leeds.

Hello Bofs
I've always Called It Lyme Park
And Living in Cheshire
I've Walked around the Area nearby over many years
As It's a Beautiful part of the Country .
One of my favourite walks Is In
Higher Poynton
Start from Nelson's Pit car park
Vernon Wharf on the Macclesfield canal
Walk East over the Canal Bridge on Lyme Road
Head uphill on a track trails towards Park moor
Through Knightslow woods and Drinkwater Meadows
To Higher Moor 402m
To the Old Bowstones ,Near Higher Lane and Mudhurst lane
And Take in the Panoramic views
Of The Peak District.
Across Cheshire And On a clear day in the distance
Halkin mountains in North Wales
Then follow a path downhill to the Mysterious Lantern woods
And bypass The Manor house of Lyme Park and Visitors Area
Retuning going back downhill to The Macclesfield Canal
And Nelson Pit
Higher Poynton
That sounds a great walk and one to try when we're back in the area - though I suspect it will be too far for the older of our 2 dogs at the moment. He's arthritic and very slow so a gentle stroll by the canal would be best for him.
Thanks Zizag
I did your first walk yesterday, coffee at the trading post on the canal side before exploring north a while then following the Ladybrook Valley Interest Trail to Jackson's Brick Works and back along the Middlewood Trail.
Will have to try the second walk sometime.
Hi Bofs.
As you leave the Macc canal and go over the Bridge .
The Walk
Is A steady Incline for about a mile
Until you get into The Back of Lyme Park .
It flattens out With views of the Manor house .
Then if you head across Park moor and Into Knightslow woods .
The track through the woods starts to Rise .
On the Other side of the woods out into open grassland .
It's a Very very Steep Incline Upto The Bowstones
Leading Upto the Gritstone Trail
Over 400 metres .
So It's best to keep to the Lower levels of the Macc canal and Middlewood way .
With lots of paths and tracks around Higher Poynton
For Alternative walks
Hi JLines
Glad you enjoyed the Walk....
And you did a circular walk along the Macc Canal ,Jackson's Brickworks and Middlewood way to Vernon Wharf .
About the Lady brook Interest Valley Trail .
I've walked Many parts of It
Started at Bramhall .
The most Interesting Walk on the Trail
Is off The Eastern side of the Macclesfield Canal Up and down some Deep Ravines
And Undulating winding trails
Over Stiles crossing the Railway line
With the Busy A6 road Nearby
Then Upto Bollinghurst brook
Then follow pathways into Lyme Park
Near the Entrance .
With a View of The Famous Folly on the Hill .
If You Follow the Road South it will take you to the Visitors centre .
And Lyme Hall.

As I have walked many parts of The Macclesfield Canal
Over many years .
As I live nearby in Cheshire
And have so many happy memories of days out Exploring the Towpaths .
It's always Relaxing and Tranquil
So many places to see
So I'm fortunate to have walked the Canal from Marple
Where The Macclesfield Canal converges with the Peak Forest Canal .
And Back to Vernon Wharf ,Higher Poynton
also
Looking Upto Lyme Park
Then onto Lyme Green Marina
To Sit and Take in the View
of All the Moored Canal boats
walk along the Towpath past Potts
Shrigley And Bollington Canal Basin .
Of course all of these places
I've walked on different various days and Start points .
And It's never ceases to amaze me of the Beautiful scenery
And lovely countryside the canal Traverses .
Hence It's one of my favourite places for days out ......
