BBC article about losing £50k on a holiday home. I’m sure it doesn’t happen everywhere like this case, but it’s worth reading, to be aware.

Probably not that unusual on sites operated by 'big boys'. Statics are depreciating assets and holding costs can be high, but losing so much in a short period is robbery.

The barrister is however correct that it is in essence a property transaction so get a lawyer to check the small print. The agreements can have very restrictive and onerous clauses.

I can barely understand why people buy statics at well north of £150,000 in areas where that will be a house.

Sadly this is an all-too-common story. We got well ripped off by park owners on what was a residential site back in the 1970s. The law has now changed for Park Homes, as they are now called, but for static holiday homes it is still a minefield. Personally, I wouldn't spend any more money on a static holiday home than I could afford to take out in my back garden and set fire to, because that is virtually what you are doing when you buy one. To my mind, buying a static is an excellent way of getting rid of any spare and unwanted money you have lying around!

We have stayed in static holiday caravans and would readily do so again, but only on a weekly rental basis. No way would I ever contemplate buying one.

Site owners can charge whatever they like for a pitch on a park, and there is no legal reason why they can't double or treble it if they want to. Then there is the question of resale. I can't think of anything that depreciates faster than a static holiday caravan, and your hands are tied when it comes to selling. Some sites will allow you to sell it on-site, but they will then take a huge commission (for doing nothing basically), but many other sites will not allow you to sell on-site at all, except to them. Then they might not want it or will offer you peanuts! That leaves you with no other choice but to pay to have it removed from the site and try to sell it privately. No other site will touch it, so the only likely interest will be either from a company that wants it as a site office, or someone who wants it as temporary accommodation on heir own land while they rebuild a house. Both won't want to pay much more than the cost of a pub lunch. Age or condition of the static is irrelevant.

It's about time there was some serious regulation on this industry, but site owners will fight tooth and nail against that.

Don't want to buy one as I prefer to have the freedom to roam in my van for as long as I can drive.

If and when it is time to stop going out in the van, then it is likely for me to call time on life.

I'm in complete agreement DK, while I can still drive I prefer to go to different places with my caravan.

However, when I can no longer drive it won't stop me getting around. There are always coach trips, rail trips etc and I'll stay in hotels and get pampered. What I currently spend on my car and caravan will probably cover the cost.

We would never consider purchasing a static. In our minds is the possibility of taking a seasonal pitch eventually to save too much towing, but that is not yet.

I know the day will come when I can no longer drive. Many people would like to get older drivers off the road. After all how can people drive through our village at 60mph when all us old whatsits insist on keeping to the 30mph limit?

When the day comes to hand in my licence, provided we are still fit enough to travel, we can always pack a suitcase and see how far we can get by bus.

In theory, using your bus pass and travelling on ordinary service buses, you can get from the tip of Cornwall to the Scottish border. Goodness knows how long it would take, but the travel at least wouldn't cost a penny.

There is a Timothy Spall film called the Last Bus which does the same the other way round! A bit of a stretch of the imagination as bus passes can only be used in the country of origin, but lets not let that get in the way of a good story?

Not sure about the Timothy Spall film as I haven't seen it but from the tip of Cornwall to the Scottish border (or vice versa) is all within the country of origin. I nearly said to the north of Scotland, then I remembered that English bus passes are not valid in Scotland or Wales.

I feel sorry for them, but people do not read the T&Cs, do not do enough research or take advice from a solicitor regarding such a large purchase so only have themselves to blame!

Update yesterday with more details: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gmy7xjewko
Over 1K Members of the Holiday Park Action Group (HPAG) are seeking compensation. (HPAG has 70K members in its FB group.)
It will be interesting to see what the outcome is. The judge will decide whether the T&Cs were clear, robust, unambiguous etc and whether they comply with or breach consumer law.
