Hi All im after some advice
My wife an i have started back caravanning after a bit of a rest. the kids have grown up and no longer come with us. So we are now looking for specific sites. I will explain.
OK we spent a great long weekend in Ledbury. We stayed at the elms. A great little site just outside the town. We walked into town and had a good look around the independent shops and then sampled the beer and food in the very old pubs around the town. We had a great time and this is the reason for my post.
We are looking for campsite within walking distance of old historic towns that have very old pubs. We dont mind a walk say around 1.5 to 2 mile walk or even on a good bus route.
We are in the south Wales (newport) area and would be happy to travel 1.5 to 2 hours for a campsite.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated
thanks in advance
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
I have already suggested Ludlow to someone else today, but you would have to make your own mind up about sites. Or Warwick, but is that too far? Chepstow I suppose is too near.
Ludlow already suggested, Shrewsbury. Warwick has CMC site on the Racecourse a short walk into the town centre.
There is CMC site at Chester or C&CC site at Delamere Forest. It's right by the station with trains to Chester or Manchester hourly.
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
Historic town nearby with nice pubs is an open brief!
Mortonhall, catch bus into Edinburgh.
Stirling, bus from Witches Craig (east) or Blair Drummond (west).
Abbey towns in the Scottish Borders - Melrose is in walking distance.
Can’t suggest English sites without looking up old diaries but we’ve enjoyed York, Chester, Beverly, Conway, Canterbury (and other cathedral cities), And yes, Ludlow & Shrewsbury. Lewes is on our list but not been there yet.
We have just returned from a stay at C&CC site at Salisbury. Walking distance from the city or bus stop just outside the site. From our pitch we could look towards Old Sarum.
The OP lives in south Wales and wants to visit towns within 1 or 2 hours drive so many of the towns suggested in previous posts are a lot further than 1 - 2 hours drive.
However I would suggest towns like Ludlow, Bridgenorth, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Pembridge, Rhayader and Elan Valley, Monmouth etc. The list is endless because just about every town has historical significance.

Oops. Might help others though - I’ve added some places to my own go-to touring list.
Many Thanks everyone for all your advice. its going to keep me busy checking these sites out.
Ludlow looks good i had a look at whitcliffe site just outside the center of town but the road to the site looks a bit tight. Has anyone stayed at this site that could offer advice on the approach road to the site.
Many Thanks
