Hi, we've booked to go to Golden Cap and I've just been looking at our route and realised the lanes to get to the site are very, very narrow - I'm now panicking as I hate driving down country lanes - so to do it with the caravan I'm going to be having kittens. Can anyone confirm if it is as bad as it looks or put my mind at rest please
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Many decades since I camped there, and very much before I had the caravan, but have no recollection of any difficulties down the lanes with just a car, AND they have improved it since I was there with more passing places added in 2019 according to web site.
Let's get a little perspective, it's ONLY 1 mile from the major A35 road, so only 5-10 minutes even at a snails pace on the lanes. It's not very narrow all of the way, only a couple of spots where the hedgerows will be close. With 3 hours difference between last check out (11am) and earliest check in (2pm) you stand little chance of meeting another caravan coming the other way, and passing places aplenty for a car to get past. It's a relatively straight road, so in most part plenty of opportunity to see any oncoming traffic. It's a dead end road, so low traffic levels out of changeover times. Much of the site is for static caravans, pods etc., so touring units are a minority, going to be mostly cars coming and going.
Read the site reviews on UKC, the approach lane was regularly commented on prior to 2019 when it was improved, but don't think there's a single gripe since!
I'm not crazy about towing my quite large van for miles down single track lanes, mostly because I usually travel alone and reversing is not easy without a spotter guiding you, but I'd do this 1 mile stretch of lane. Has to said though, I have no problem driving forwards through the narrowest lanes that the car and van will fit through! As the web site says, approach on Sea View Lane, NOT Mill Lane, so follow that advice and ignore whatever any Sat Nav or Route Planners says to the contrary!
If you haven't done so already, use Google street view to do a dry run down the lane, so you have a feel for it.
We went to Golden Cap with our first moho many years ago (probably about 15), the approach at that time was for a mile along a single track with only one passing place quite at the seaward end. Fortunately, going out there was only one oncoming car, it was near the passing place and the car obligingly slipped into that.
Once there, the site is in a lovely location with a nice pub by the beach (which would be the source of most traffic during the day).
I was quite concerned about our trip back to Chideock (the local village), as I didn't fancy having to back up but fortunately, we met nothing going back.
I don't know if they've improved access, it would be worth getting in touch with the site if you were worried.
As well is two words!
