We are from switzerland and looking forward to returning to the uk with our van this summer. This year a couple of friends would like to accompany us and rent a camper van in wales in mid-july. now they are afraid that the camping boom will be so big this year that the campsites could be fully booked. But we would like to travel spontaneously without booking in advance. We never had trouble finding a nice spot in the uk, but that was before covid. How do you think this camping season in the uk, specially in Wales will be?
Thanks for some good advice.
Best regards toby

My advice would be try to avoid booking sites starting on a Friday or Saturday. In our experience, sites are always much busier over the weekend, so sites that are fully booked for a Friday or Saturday start are often half-empty by Monday. Consequently we always try and start our holidays on a Monday.
When sites have an automatic booking system and you try to book a week starting on Saturday, the result will often come back "sorry, fully booked", but if you put in the same week starting Monday you will get in.
We never book anything more than a couple of weeks ahead, and often only a few days. We had no problem whatsoever booking anything last year despite the fact that I kept on hearing that everywhere was fully booked.
It depends partly on what type of site you like to stay at. Your visit will coincide with the start of the school summer holidays, so the bigger sites with entertainment etc in popular holiday areas will be at their busiest. However, if you have several site choices and phone ahead a day or two in advance, you should be okay.
Agree. Book the next site when you’re at the previous one. That’s a compromise. Some popular sites refused “drop ins” last year, clearly stated on their websites.
The UKCS map based Site Search will be very useful for you; favour sites with more stars as they have better reviews.
You should maybe book your campervan sooner rather than later though - that might be the issue more than availability of pitches.
Sounds like a lot of fun.
Hi everyone. Thank you very much for your advice! We like basic Campsites with nothing but Toilet & Shower and maybe a nice view. On our last trip in the UK we stayed on a lot of Farm Camping Sites.
All we want is toilets, showers, and EHU. A nice view is preferable too, but as we are offsite a lot of the time, not essential. Most of the time we spend in the caravan we are asleep.
If you are a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club or the Caravan and Motorhome Club you have access to hundreds of 5 van sites across the U.K., many with toilet, shower and electric hook up. Some of these do get booked up but there is generally space, although it is a good idea to phone ahead to check. Most of these prefer notice of your arrival anyway, as they are not the owners’ main employment and there may not be someone there all the time.

We don't have the dogs any more so could go to Europe, but can't get our heads around the long boring drive through uninteresting parts of France to get to anywhere half decent. (feels pain of flames and shooting).
I've never cared much for France. When we crossed over to Dunkirk (in preference to Calais), we would travel into Belgium and up through the Ardennes, Luxembourg and into the Mosel / Saar valley. We really like Germany, Benelux countries and the Netherlands. France just gets in the way, but I like their food and wine!

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
We went down to the Austrian border with Germany a few years ago. Had some very hot weather on the way down and again in Belgium on the way back. The fortnight in Germany, the temperature never rose above 9 degrees, it snowed in the mountains. The car had to go to the garage, so we couldn't move. It put us off a bit!
The best bit was fetching Harry the Hound from friends, ever had a lab jump into your lap? Never could get the car sorted, sold it in the end.

There's a lot of boring driving in the UK too, especially on motorways, except the M62 crossing the Pennines of course, and the M6 going north from Lancaster. And if you don't use the motorways you end up queueing through towns and villages. I'd rather queue through villages in France.
