Sorry that no one has replied to you, Mrs B. We did a circumnavigation of Cumbria years ago, from Carlisle right round the coast to the Arnside & Silverdale AONB. But though we passed through Maryport, we didn’t stay.
As far as I recall, it’s where Mary Queen of Scots landed after she’d been taken from Scotland. They sailed from an inlet near Dundrennan Abbey, where she spent the night. A reminder that it was quicker to sail than travel over land.
Thanks for your reply Fiona. We have been around there years ago. Was it the battle of Lammermuir that was fought near Glasgow? My Dad came from Crosshill in Glasgow and attended Battlefield primary school.
Hmm. Crosshill is near Langside in S Glasgow. (Went past it on the bus last week, oddly enough.) The Battle of Langside was in 1568, I assume that’s the derivation of the Battlefield PS name. The school has its own website but may be a different building to the one your father went to. Nice part of the city, near to Holmwood House (NTS), designed by Alexander “Greek” Thompson & an interesting visit.
Next stop - more about the battle. I’m curious.
Oh yes, Langside was the right one! We went once to see where Dad lived. Hampden Park is near there. Dad's grandfather used to take him there to see Queen's Park play.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Queens Park too.
Have a look at this YouTube then. It’s a wee bitty long (18 mins, fast fwd through the opening music section and you can also miss the last section from the film) but it’s very good for context & also confirms my comment about Dundrennan Abbey (whew).
