My search shows that the last post on this topic was a LONG time ago!
So wise ones any ideas for campsites near city/town centres please? I can't see a way to search for this.
We have already enjoyed Oxford, Cambridge, York, Cardiff, Salisbury and one in between Postsmouth and Chichester.
Any more ideas please?
Thanks in advance

Liverpool is a great place to visit if you haven't been. I think that Lyons Farm CL is still going. Durham is lovely , several sites around there. Then there is Cardiff, plenty of interest there.
Sorry, missed that you have been to Cardiff.

What about Coventry and Birmingham?

And Chester.

There's none particularly near Manchester, but your best bet is to stay outside the City near a bus (free?), train, or tram.
I only know the north side, so Burrs at Bury for the tram or bus, Hollingworth Lake for the train, Gelder Clough for a bus.

Canterbury, but I imagine that the cathedral is expensive now. Lincoln, ditto, the cathedral was donation only when we went years ago. Ely, ditto expensive for the cathedral but worth it. Combine with Cambridge. Am I getting boring? You did ask..

Manchester and Sheffield both accessible from the Peak district.
Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate all have sites not far from the centre. Visit one you can viait them all.
All the main Scottish cities are very close to open countryside with sites.

Canterbury Cathedral was less than £20 when we went a couple of years ago, and that was for an annual pass so we went again the following year.
Manchester Cathedral is free, donations encouraged.
Leeds and Bradford can be done by train from the station at Littleborough, near to Hollingworth Lake.

Mortonhall at Edinburgh. Might be the only site that’s actually within a Scottish city boundary? A bus ride from a city centre with much to see, but walks into the Braid Hills direct from the site & an excellent farm shop at the entrance. But go out of season & certainly not! during the Edinburgh Festival. We go for the rugby in the autumn.
Blair Drummond - a bus ride from Stirling (my favourite castle), but again walks in the castle estate direct from the site or to Doune (the castle is a famous film location). Safari park too.
Perth - CCC Scone is nearby, on the racecourse & the estate of Scone Palace. New road nearby, might be noisy.
Inverness - Torvean is on the canal & near the botanic gardens; short bus one way into the city, the other way to Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness.
Ditto a site (name forgotten) outside Aberdeen but needs a walk & bus, but “the granite city” has much of interest. A reminder to use the Site Search, putting in the city name into the search box.
Dundee is easily reached by bus or train from Carnoustie, which has the Woodlands site, or bus from a cracking site at Tayport on the Fife Coast Way - bus goes in the opposite direction to my favourite place : St Andrews. If you go on Sunday, anyone & their dog can wander around the famous Old Course, the beach is fabulous (“chariots of fire”), and its university is the oldest in Scotland, there’s an international vibe during term time, ruined cathedral, castle.

Chester CMC site. Close to Chesire Oaks outlet park with buses to Chester or Liverpool also a couple of park and ride places.one at the very good zoo.
There are 2 CMC sites at York, one in the city on the Riverside, the other off the ring road close to a park and ride which has EV charging too.

Many thanks to all who contributed! We live very close to Leeds/Bradford and know them well.
Manchester and Liverpool are good shouts.

Fiona is a mind reader, or have you been reading my mail?!
We stayed at Scone (Perth) a couple of years ago and visited Dundee by train.
Got a bit of a tour booked for July - Dunbar C&CC, Banchory Lodge Aberdeen,
Ardtower Inverness, overnight at Aviemore, Cairnsmill for St Andrews, then Dunstan Hill C&CC. Hope we'll avoid the midges by keeping mainly east.

You might like Wirral Country Park. You can get the train from nearby West Kirby, directly into Liverpool and with 1 change, down to Chester.

Thanks again. Unfortunately we are in C&CC and some of the suggestions are the "other" club, is it worth joining that one as well?

We are members of both clubs, and nearly always use Caravan Club CLs. Cheaper than Club sites. We look for sites with EHU, no showers or loos, plenty of them all over the country.

Thanks Mrs Bonce, all we need is EHU hardstanding, water and black/grey waste disposal, rarely use site loos or showers.
We have used some CS but there aren't that many.
I looked at the Wirral one mentioned above and in September was £37 per night (more for non-members) that's a bit steep!

Try Lyons Farm, assuming it's still going. Easy to get to Liverpool from there. Or you could stay at a CS or CL near Chester. Thornleigh Park Farm I think is a CS. And I had forgotten Shrewsbury which is great, plenty of small sites in the area

Have a look at Hidden Corner in Maghull, near Liverpool. Easy to get to Liverpool or Southport by bus or train. Its a camping and caravan club site.

We've never stayed there but we walk past it and looks a nice site.

Lyons Farm is £5 less per night than Hidden Corner. 1st is a CL, 2nd a CS.
