Thanks for your response. There was no indication that the site was closed, we looked at their website first and when we drove there the barrier was open so it you would certainly get the impression that it is open.
In my opinion we did everything we could to find someone before driving in that bit further and even then it was only a few yards. When the guy approached and looked in the car he would've seen 2 young children in the back so it was prettty obvious that we were a family looking around, we even had details of his website with us so it was then 100% obvious that we were there for the right reasons and could've been a paying customer.
I am shocked that he spoke to us in the way that he did and that it why I posted because people should not be allowed to get away with it. My husband runs his own business and we would expect to have no customers if we treated people in this way.

Judging by some of the replies, the guy has a problem and if he continues to speak to people in such an offensive manner, then word will get round and he might find himself running out of customers and that will be his own fault.
Golden Valley is a Campsite, it was open, the barrier was up, the guy should expect that people might like to visit and look round. We wanted to look round a site once, before booking and the warden approached us as we drove onto the site. They weren't at all abrupt and off hand, they were very polite and welcoming - just how I would expect someone offering a public service to be. At Golden Valley, I would have done the same as Mick & Elaine, drove onto the site to look for someone. If the guy doesn't want 'just anybody' wandering round the site, why was the barrier up?
Perhaps he is a farmer who reluctantly has had to take in campers as a matter of subsidising a farm.I know some farmers are very unwelcoming to people in their fields townies leave gates open and let cattle etc out.
I only telephoned to ask about availabilty and would have booked had it not been for the persons abrupt ignorant manner. I've never forgotten the name Golden Valley but sadly for all the wrong reasons. My money spends anywhere, his loss.

We've just booked for this site and the lady we spoke two seemed very pleasant. Looking for reassurance now!

Julian,
Just to reassure you, we stayed on this site last September, and a very peaceful site (even when full), with a nice layout.
Yes, the owner was seen driving around a lot, but from what I could gather, the site is still relatively new, and there was still quite a lot of work being carried out (although not disturbing). As I personal opinion, I think the fact that the owner is so visible is quite a good thing to deter any anti-social behavoir (I wish some other sites would follow this lead).
Regarding the attitude of the guy, unfortunately I cannot comment, as when we booked I spoke to a lady, and whilst I was on site everyone seemed pleasant.
We live fairly close to this site and we drove in once just to have a look. There was no barrier so we just drove in, had a look around and no one noticed us at all !! There are lots of lovely sites in Derbyshire, that we use regularly, but i think the reality of the place is not like its description.
We live very close to here, the man is not a farmer,so no worrys about him worrying about his land, its a campsite and as such if someone wants to look well I think they should be able to without that sort of hassle,Its not very rural situated as it is between little pit villages,as nice as they are still very industrial area not quite the Peak District and personally speaking horrendously overpriced,I agree does look very nice on web but I would recommend one looks around it first (if you are allowed!).
