Yes your friend is right, some sites do not accept tents - there are two locally, however, there are oh so many lovely site which do accept tents.
Lots of sites accept all unit (tent, caravan and motorhomes, and things like folding campers which are a cross between a tent and a caravan.)
Go and enjoy your tent.
