UK is much smaller than Canada, much more urbanised, and most places are man-managed (farmland, forestry, moorland) unlike Canada - we have almost no truly wilderness areas in UK. An absence of crowds is the closest you'll get to wilderness here.
Yes, the law is different up here but wild camping (strictly speaking) is non-motorised: you arrive on foot or bike & stay just a few days. That said, with discretion & responsible behaviour, a small tent is well tolerated especially in areas where people go hill walking.
I agree with Fiona but would add that this mostly only works if you are pitching a small tent above 1500 feet, where there are no houses, farms etc. In any case you have the advantage of being a foreigner and can claim ignorance if challenged. You could for example park a car in a suburban street in a town like Keswick and set out on foot with a small one or 2 man tent. Personally I would prefer to stay in youth hostels, as you don't have to carry as much gear then and foul weather affects you less. You can do a 5 day circular walk, visiting 5 hostels and leave your car at the first hostel.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Around here the Police (and Fire Brigade) have been moving-on camper vans found in various known "wildcamping" spots and anyone trying it in a tent at the moment will get very short shrift from the land owner. There are FAR too many risks!!
And as for vehicles, really don't try to argue the toss as a Section 59 Notice will (and has) followed very quickly.
Especially on NRW ground!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
