Indeed it is; I've lived here for 17 years.

Edit - also got our eye on the hostel on the island of Eday, which has some tent pitches. Beautiful walking in the north of the island. I'll write a review, as this site is not listed on ukcampsite.

The good folks of UKCS have a short form to fill in so they can list unknown sites for others to find them in Site Search. I've added a good half dozen over the years. Sounds like this one on Eday would be useful for others to know.

York - packed with history and museums. Poplar Farm and Nayburn Locks sites both have a bus stop outside and river cruise into the city if you don't fancy driving in.

I'll certainly add Eday after we stay on the site, Fiona. Might even be this weekend, although Sanday is favourite - if the weather forecasters can make their minds up, that is.

We too, are a family of history nerds and choose our campsites accordingly. We're off to Northumberland at the end of this month.
We've done
Cumbria - for Carlisle castle and Hadrians Wall
Lincolnshire - castle etc
South East - Sutton Hoo
Dorset and Cornwall for various historical locations.

That's just a few. I use both our Eng Heritage and NT books when choosing depending on what we want to see.
Even did a detour in France last year to see the fabulous
MuséoParc Alésia

-------------
2026
Various weekends, weather and time permitting
April - Yorkshire and Yorkshire
June - Wiltshire and Oxfordshire
Autumn - North and Scotland

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

Have you thought about Kent? Dover Castle offers enthralling insights into Tudor history and the Second World War and needs at least 2 days to do it justice. Then there's Canterbury Cathedral and the Canterbury Tales experience.

Pretty much anywhere you visit in London is steeped in history going back centuries.

But if I had to pick a single favourite location for history it would probably be Lincoln. The town itself has features from almost every period from Roman occupation onwards, the castle's previous use as a jail is fascinating and the cathedral - well if you've seen it words don't really do it justice.
