There are a web sites (eg. Visitscotland.com) that list sites in Scotland where various films and TV series were shot. There maybe some locations worth seeing as part of your tour.

I had a walk with my dog and a Scottish ex-colleague and friend this evening to say goodbye before he moves back to Scotland, and mentioned this to him as I said I would pay him a visit when I am up there next year, and he said it is a lovely route.

That’s the North Coast 500, missing out the southern Gairloch loop (which is stunning scenery, you can get a sense of it by heading south from Ullapool for a day). It has its own website, very special places & specific problems related to sheer numbers due to the popularity and (sadly) irresponsible behaviour by people camping off sites. It’s very well worth doing, but have a look at the many threads about it on UKCS.
The OP says they are wary of roads, correct me if I am wrong, but I think that route involves quite a lot of single track which we would not consider when towing.
Yes have seen the north coast 500 looks amazing but wouldn't fancy it towing a caravan! We are planning on annan, loch Lomond, ullapool, Glencoe and moffat so get a decent amount of time at each (more so Glencoe/ullapool) to travel more in the car to mallaig etc. Going to do the east coast next year as husband has already done some of that area.

Have booked Gairloch campsite,awaiting pricing to pay deposit,first time been back since went with our kids 3times 70s/80s,just gonna wing it then,see what happens.
Good thing about not having any children and can work anywhere as long as there is a decent internet connection is that I can take my van out whenever I like at short notice.
I would definitely attempt the NC 500 route during non school holidays, most likely to be mid June or September when the weather is still decent.

We may all hope that we're allowed to travel and that campsites are open.
I've travelled much of what is now the NC500 in the past, but I wouldn't do it again. I much prefer to find quieter places.
If anyone wants to visit the N.E, I may be able to make a few ideas.

Indeed. The west coast sections are definitely not for towing! but Ullapool is fine for basing a caravan and exploring by car north & south - Summer Isles, Gairloch, National Trust for Scotland gardens at Poolewe, site of Atlantic Convoy gatherings etc.
And north from Inverness to Thurso is fine, now that the Berrydale Braes steep hairpin bends have been realigned. (Articulated lorries used to have to come out into the oncoming lane to get around the bends. I think there may be old YouTubes still.)

Hmmm, I may need to modify my plan for the West Coast, as I am not too keen on narrow bendy single tracks in a car, let alone a campervan!
I am glad to have opted for a MWB VW Crafter and not a bigger van for certain!
In 2012, to escape the Olympics mania in the south, I spent 2 weeks in August in Scotland, at C&CC Glencoe and Nairn, and drove from Glencoe to Nairn along Loch Ness towing a leisure trailer and it was beautiful, and this is one of my favourite memory of the trip:

Towed right up to Durness a few times, not a problem, rather have roads with twin track but hey ho they are what they are. Sango Sands at Durness, bogs and showers aren't brill, but still must be one of the best sites in the UK.
