Yeah, that can be the case.
I use tokens. You can get them on amazon or most Irish charity shops sell 1 &2 euro tokens. Ever since covid, the trolleys are usually left unlocked anyway.
It's well worth it, if expensive. Imo the Ring of Kerry is the most beautiful, closely followed by south west Donegal. Between the two, the coastal area of Mayo is good too, and the Wicklow coast and mountains on the eastern side. The Dingle area is great too. Worth every penny for a one off trip. If your car runs on diesel, it's cheaper in the Republic than in UK, including Northern Ireland. We didn't much like the Cork area.

We visited in 2017 after signing up to the Stena Line website and receiving a discount code by email. If I remember rightly we also part paid for the crossing using Tesco clubcard points. Not sure if either of those are still offered but they'd be worth looking into. But when all is said and done, Ireland is about 3x as far away as France and the ferry prices reflect this.
We did an outward crossing from Holyhead-Dublin (the ferries haven't sailed into Dun Laughoire for a while now) and returned on the Rosslare-Fishguard crossing. The Irish Ferries route between Pembroke and Rosslare involves a slightly shorter drive to/from England via the M4, but a slightly longer crossing so take your pick.
As for expenses over there, it seemed like swings and roundabouts really. Food was a bit more expensive but diesel was cheaper and there seemed to be a lot more petrol stations at the sides of main roads than is the case in much of the UK mainland. We stayed on one site that was expensive (but we loved it) but the second one was very cheap.
It seemed that as a general rule, the further west you go the worse the roads get!
Ultimately I'd say that if the cost of getting there is off-putting, that's understandable. But if you can afford it, do it. We loved the holiday we had.
