Happy New Year my friend and many thanks for the Itinery above. I have printed it all off and will certainly take a look see when we get up there. We are hoping to get away for the last two weeks in May (but as we are both retired teenagers this might be stretched to a third week if all is good, weather etc.)
Thanks again to all members for their helpful input.
Les - There used to be a Lone Piper who played the Bagpipes in a beauty spot at Glencoe (don't know if he's still there) but if he is well worth stopping for. You are choosing to go at the best time 'May/June' don't worry the scenery will make you forget about the midgies.
Isn't Sandal the posh part of Wakefield - don't think you are too far from us!
Happy Holidays

I am taking all this information onboard and will report when we eventually return......thats IF we return. From the posting up to now we may well become Scotish gypsies and stay up there. ( I did spit when I typed the g...word. Honest.) lol.
Sandal has always had that kind of reputation and we were very dubious when we moved here a year ago as now.......but really they are just nice folk.....with one or two exceptions naturally (like us for instance....lol)
For scenery you can't beat Glencoe and surrounding area - it's fantastic. Check out Caolasnacon Farm (B863) between Glencoe (A82) and Kinlochleven - it's perfect peace and we head up there every year. May is the best time to go - before the midgies - and we always have great weather.
Both sides have their attractions but for me it's the west that is the best, especially if you're travelling all the way north. Last summer we used campsites in Ullapool, Scourie and Durness before heading to the north west and over to Orkney for a week.
------------- Regards
Steve

Having done both I would cast my vote for the East coast, lots of lovely little fishing villages, especially along the Aberdeenshire coast, check out Gardenstown and Banff to name but 2, inland - good municipal site at Turiff - in fact Aberdeenshire has several municipal sites, my favourite is probably Stonehaven, which also has an excellent fish n chip shop. West Coast is more dramatic overall, but is also windier and wetter.
No, anstruther has the best chip shop in the harbour!

By the way this thread is heading we shall probably be seeing more UKCS members on our Scotland trip than we have come across since joining the club....lol
We have planned our route now and are heading up the West side the first week in June (before the midges get out) and then across the top, and a last week trecking down the East side before heading back home to Yorkshire. We shall be looking out for other members. Thanx to all for your help.
I can recommend Bunree caravan club site near Fort William. Views are brilliant looking out over Loch Linnie and Fort William is nearby. Also, I think the CC has a site at Oban. We went in April and took a trip over to Mull.
Used to live up beside the Moray Firth. I would highly recommend the North East with its whiskey and Castle trails, white beaches, quaint fishing villages, Cairngorms oh and just soi much more. I loved it and now just miss it!!! Less midges in the east too.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
