Drink lime in your water days before going on a trip where midges occur.The lime will "marinade" your system and change the smell of your body-odeur, well, at least for midges it seems. Stay away from watery patches, shade and dress for the occaission. Avon Silky Skin So Smooth or something works fine. And as you keep moving they won't bother you that much eather.
On topic of Bellingham: Try the Demesne Farmcampsite right in the middle of this lovely little town. Been there several times and hardly encountered a midge and believe me... midges are especially fond of my meat and blood!
