The thread is titled Dogs on beaches. I was merely suggesting that would be equally logical to ban children on beaches because of a significant minority of parents who fail to control them. My reference to children on caravan sites was an effor to draw a light hearted analogy

we have found plenty of dog friendly places to go on holiday. I always contact the local tourist information office and they will send you a list of all the beaches in the area and any restrictions that apply. Most towns (unless the beach is very small) have an area where dogs are allowed. Some of the best we have found are the Isle of Wight where large areas of lovely beach are open to dogs, even in main resorts like Sandown & Shanklin (not Ventnor though) Pembrokeshire is also good, Tenby has great beaches for dogs and Weymouth and area also good. Restrictions normally only apply to town beaches, many miles of rural beaches are open to dogs, but the ones above are also safe clean beaches for children, in town and with all facilities. I hesitate to join in the dog mess debate as it will never be resolved - there are irresponsible people in all walks of life but I honestly didn't notice a problem on any of these beaches and as a "responsible dog owner" myself I do take notice of this!

Hi Snow, nappy sacks are one way, but try your council, ours provides poop bags for free and they biodegrade!! There are a few dogy sites that list beaches you do get to use, but from experiance we've found Wales great. Lots of places have a pooch zone on one end of the beach. On Anglesey there's even a blue flag beach that is dog free on one half and canine heaven on the other. We have had problems finding info for English resorts, but some sucsess when we contacted the local tic directly. A pain, but better than not being able to walks on the beach!

I hope i do, it does bug me as well when dog owners don't pick up their doggy poo, i always take nappy sacks where ever i go.

I agree, I am a dog owner and it does bug me when owners just leave dog poo instead of clearing up after them, equally I am a parent and I would not just sit by and allow my children to be any kind of a pain to anyone else. The problem here is that people are sometimes irresponsible. We took our dog to the beach for the first time earlier this year and she loved it. Ran about in the sea, had a fabulous time. She also did a doo-doo and we cleaned up after her. We picked our dog up from the kennels today and she did a poo as soon as we came out, I cleaned it up. Another dog owner came out and her dog did a poo and she just put her dog in the car and left the offending poo on the car park. You can't justify that, and as a loving dog-owner I was surprised.
