Going to play devils' advocate, but just because someone should!

Just spent August bank holiday on a 5 van site.... Kids on the site a delight absolutely no problem. However my friend had the joy of a dog pooh at back of her tent where one of the visiting dogs had deposited.... not much fun for her scraping it off her shoe........
Had a friend who let a holiday cottage who used to allow pets, one season later that had all changed, property completely wrecked. It is sad but there are a lot of very poor dog owners out that pamper and baby dogs with no idea whatsoever how to train or control them.
Every dog owner I ever speak to very firmly asserts that they pick up the dog pooh..... I find this surprising because there is a hell of a lot of dog pooh out there and it is antisocial and a health hazard.
On the other hand, I've spent many days on sites where the kids have been a nightmare (playing football against my car and caravan etc.) and seriously think twice about going on a site where they do allow kids (I'm a teacher... they're not like that in school!!!), but then there's lovely kids, lovely parents, lovely dogs, lovely owners, and not-so-lovely of each too. I doubt that either charging or not charging for a dog on site would prevent your friend from getting muck on her shoe I'm afraid.
I owned a holiday home here in the Lakes, and ran a hotel and managed a few other holiday homes. We all allowed pets, and seriously tried not to welcome children! Sticky fingers! Dog owners were very conscientious and cleaned up impeccably after themselves, whereas parents of children always left the houses/hotels well after changeover time, hurrying the kids into the car, leaving tonnes of stuff behind we had to post, and a mess, as they were too busy with getting the kids sorted to think of anything else! The only times we had to get compensation from guests was when kids had done stuff. 90% of the time, our cleaners could guess when kids had been, and couldn't guess when dogs had been... says a lot.
As a teacher in a deprived area, I say bring in compulsory parenting classes, pre-conception. If they fail, they're not allowed a licence to have a kid... financial situation to be taken into account!
Talking of mess that people with kids leave in houses/hotels, its the same in pubs, they come in move tables and chairs around, make a load of noise, upset everyone else that is in the pub, then leave a load of mess on and under the tables, and dont even put the tables back when they go.

I constantly get complimented on how my children behave in pubs etc. usually after I've just apologised if they've talked quite loudly, then the people launch into tales of what some children have done - I found it unbelievable, it's hardly rocket science to teach your children manners! However, I feel the thread is slipping away from the original subject ..... !

Hi, yep back to dogs...wasn't it not too many years ago that you did have to have a dog licence? though if you did would everyone buy them? it would be like the tv licence or car tax dodgers? majority would have one but most would wait until they were caught or would say 'take the dog then' and then go get another pup..it's a tricky one but i like to politely tell the owner to clean up and shame them? if they get abusive then speak to wardens and as a last resort pick it up and place it outside of their awning door...

I must agree with some of the views on here ,I for one always clean up after our dog ,It makes me sick to see other owners who knowingly let their dogs foul anywhere and just walk by as if it wasnt them .
I wish they would bring back the license,But that wouldnt make any difference to the owners !It isnt the dogs fault. Its the attitude of the 'couldnt care less 'owners.
And as for charging for dogs,,why do some charge a heck of a lot ,yet others welcome them for free.

HaPennySlug... Hi.... I used to be a community midwife in a VERY mixed area. I could tell from the minute I met the mother in pregnancy where the future social problems would come from. This was NOT either always from the poorest, although obviously if people are dysfunctional there incomes are often dreadful but not always.....
The awful thing is that these parents were not awful they were often just damaged from poor parenting themselves. I am sure we should be intervening more forcably but it is not an easy problem. I just knew that I had to put as much love and care into them as I could and hope that helped if only a little.
However this thread is about Dogs! The problem with kids is addressed because there are a huge number of adult only sites out there. Dogs are very rarely banned they are priced out... which does at least give owners a choice.
Actually I am disturbed by the way immediately people draw attention away with dogs by comparing them to children.
1. Bad behaviour in one group is not justified by bad behaviour in another... that is a divertionary tactic.... and a failure to face facts
2. Children are are our future .... and are not in anyway to be compared to dogs. Dogs are a domesticated animal of great worth and it is degrading to their species refer to them as surrogate children. Dogs deserve respect in their own right. In order to be a good dog owner you have to master your dog and be pack leader that is in fact the reality... not be a surrogate parent.
By the way HaPenny Slug tried teaching, was terrible at it the kids had me for breakfast... but have great respect for those of you out there that carry the torch..
We use nappy sacks, I think thats what they are called. They only cost a few pence each for a hundred and it only takes 2 minutes to clean up after our dog, thats if she does get caught short. She very rarely goes to the loo on a site, thats because she is exercised regularly off site, but we still clean up after her. I for one would ban owners from a site who do not.

It is because some people think dogs are more important than children.

We have a dog and sometimes take her camping. She is always on a long leash in the the tent, after she managed to squeeze out under the canvas one night and we found an assortment of tennis balls outside our tent . We clear up after her at all times, including when we are walking in the woods. We were the idiots driving around the New Forest looking for a bin with a rather smelly nappy sack in our car.
As to the children bit, ours arent allowed to play ballgames near other peeps tents, are told to keep their voices down and we can take them to a pub/restuarant and they will sit nicely with their food. But they arent perfect angels and do sometimes break our rules and they get told off.
Its a shame that some inconsiderate owners are making it more expensive for our dog to join us on camping trips and luckily she has a foster Aunty and Uncle who happily have her if we want.

Oh, I hope you weren't thinking I was meaning poor people shouldn't have kids! I'm sorry if it came across like that... I've also taught in leafy Hampshire suburbs, and more people, or should I say au pairs, would fail there than up here! I do think financial situation should be a consideration though, kids cost a fortune!
No Ha Penny Slug I did not think that of you at all.... not at all. Just covering my own back.... . It is so easy with just the written word for people reading it completely differently to the way that it was intended......
Actually I am a terribly fond of dogs although am sure that does not sound like it in my posts about dogs I just get totally infuriated by inept owners.

its just bad owners ruining it for us good clean owners. I have paid £40 for our dog in a log cabin before, but it is ridiculous, we always leave the accommodation CLEANER than when we went in it.
same here. I think that responsible dog owners get also a bit paranoid and go the extra mile to ensure everything is left clean and tidy, all you need is a bad dog owner to ruin it for the rest of us (i.e.: the following year the property doesn't allow dogs anymore).
I remember one year in a holiday flat in the Lakes, the hoover was hopeless, so the night before that we were due to leave I went to the local newsagent to buy some brown sticky tape and me the oh spent 2 hours on hands and knees trying to pick up as much hair as possible. I did put in a complaint through the agency, (and left an apologetic note to the cleaners), hopefully the hoover got replaced! Ah, and they charge you £ 20.00 to bring the dog!
