Talking of leaving electric equipment on, how about this for "I'm alright jack".
My next door neighbours have got their garden done out like a fairy grotto complete with ornamental lighting and a fountain. I couldn't believe it when, last night I looked out of the window to see the whole thing lit up, fountain running and not a living soul in sight. They were indoors watching the telly 'cos I could hear it.
I think it's OK to have all this on if you're out in the garden enjoying these " lovely summer evenings" or you're doing a bit of entertaining in the garden, but is it really necessary to have the whole thing up and running just for the sake of it? I don't think so.
Vic
Are you sure these aren't solar powered lights? My neighbours have lots of these and the garden looks like Heathrow Airport at night.

Mmmmm- how do you think I feel - I really liked the look and sound of Dornafield in Devon, brilliant reviews, good location for tourist attractions - problem was that once Id decided thats where i wanted to go i wasnt keen on changing my mind ! Imagine hubbys face when the charges are so much for tent pitch with electric, so much per adult on top of this, so much per child on top of this, so much for a large tent (only 5mx4m - not exactly massive!!) on top of this, and so much for non caravan club members on top of that !!! Works out a whopping £35 a night!! Better be worth it!!

Well Vic, they obviously have more money than sense. I wonder how much this adds to their leccy bill.
They're a lovely couple and we count ourselves very lucky to have them as neighbours. They are both in their early 60's as am I and he has recently sold his garage business. They have no family and regrettably this makes them totally self-centred and very selfish for they only have themselves to think of. As a consequence one witnesses this kind of thing on a regular basis.
Vic I would hate that. I like to see black dark when I look out my windows at night. Why don't people enjoy what nature has to offer instead of illuminating every corner?
We have garden lights but they are only ever on if and when we are entertaining at night, which is very rare. I think its about two years since we had warm enough weather after dark to be out there with the lights on. I'm not sure if they even work now.
Cut the cables and give the poor nocturnal creatures a chance!!
Back to the subject of pitch charges I think it a bit misleading when you first see the pitch price and then realise just how many extras there are. But on the other hand, imagine a large site where you pay the pitch price no matter what you put on it. I can see sites completely packed to the gills with every conceivable sleeping receptical crammed onto one pitch.
At least this way it discourages some of that behaviour. I am imagining a pitch with the obligatory windbreaks all around, a caravan, an awning, a few tents, at least a couple of cars, a paddling pool, a lawn mower, a gazebo. Hang on I did see that last year on a site on the south coast. It was a ruddy nightmare. The people on that pitch behaved like they were in a large detached house in the middle of a field and forgot they had nieghbours no more than a few feet away. He decided to mow his pitch on the Sunday afternoon with the new lawnmower he had just dashed down to Tesco to purchase. To do this he had to move no less than three cars, a quad bike, the paddling pool, a freezer, furniture, a table with pet tortoise container on it etc etc. He spent all his time pacing around the edge of his pitch just inside the panel fencing (windbreaks to you and I) talking loudly on his mobile phone. The TV was on so loud it kept us awake most of the night and there was at least 10 of them camped out all over. It was awful and resulted in us leaving a day early (we only went for 3 days!)
So yes if extra charges discourages this type of behaviour then why not.

Having a friend who owns a campsite, I understand their dilemma in deciding how to structure their charges… They can’t please everyone all the time…
In particular, I don’t mind paying for my awning on a grass pitch as it can and does cause damage that requires either repair or for the pitch to be “rested”, even when using “breathable” ground sheets.
However; I object to paying extra for an awning on a hardstand pitch, as no damage is caused whatsoever.
Dog charges are fair enough, if cost has been incurred repairing grass damage or providing facilities.
Either way, it’s never easy for the park operators/owner to make this fully fair. At the end of the day, you pay your money and make your choice!

------------- Shall we take the awning down; in-case it rains in the morning?
Off to my first site where you have to pay for showers and been collecting 50ps all week. Would have rather paid an extra couple of quid on top of the site fee to avoid having to think about it. i do usually avoid sites like this but it looks so good for the kids so will give my verdict on return.

This year, the least we've paid (for 2 of us) has been £6 and the most £12! And the facilities were a lot better at the £6 campsite than at the £12 one.
I have a confession to make. One time we couldn't get on a site with shower blocks etc. We thought about going to another site and using their nice shower blocks with all our gear and helping ourselves. There was no way that anyone on the site could have known we weren't staying there the place is so huge and there is no security barrier on the entrance. We didn't do it in the end cos we had good washing facilities in our folding camper and managed OK for the couple of days we were there.
The site without the facilities was a quarter of the price. Thought about the people paying all that much more for all those extras and would have felt rotten doing it. But I bet there are loads of people that do at that particular site, it would be very, very easy.
So I guess the idea of getting people to pay for the showers is a good one. At least you aren't paying for every tom, dick and harry to wander in off the beach and have a hot shower at your expense.

We usually end up paying extra for our child and dog. Most sites we have been to are for two adults and a car..have no idea why
perhaps any site owners reading this could explain

Thatas why three sites in our area have the coded key pads for their showers and toilets
