We are members of the C&CC and have been for the last 9 years originally as tent campers and now as caravanners and we have stayed on quite a lot of their sites and with only a few exceptions we have been allowed to choose our pitch (out of 3 or 4 possibilities) so I don't know why other people are not able to do so either.
That is in contrast to our experience, on each C&CC site, once we have checked in and paid, we are then told that the HSM will come with us to our pitch. They have never asked us to find a pitch and come back to let them know, neither have they ever given us a choice of a few pitches.
Last time at Delamere though, when we went with friends, we asked beforehand, at time of booking, for 2 specific pitches next to each other, and we got them.
Next time, will try and ask if it is possible to have a choice, as, like you, we too prefer to face south, and not under a load of trees either, so we'll see how it goes.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
I only joined the C&CC last year but on most sites was offered a choice of pitches when signing in, they then showed me to the one I chose.
Thinking about this, maybe it's something some site managers offer and it depends on where you go. Seems strange that some of us have been offered choice and others that have been members for years have not.
I suspect it depends on how busy they are - if they're expecting a lot of units in because it's a Friday evening they may not have time to mess about so they pre-allocate the pitches, whereas if you turned up on a Thursday mid afternoon they may ask which of the empty pitches you would like.
They've always been very accomodating about pitching me and other friends close together when we've booked separately.

ccc include tents cc supposed to be more select???????????
Not sure I would call it "select", anyway, quite a few CC sites also accept tents, you'd have to check their website and the relevant site for details.
