We found this at a site in Derbyshire called Clover fields.
When I asked to book a pitch the first thing they asked was 'had we been there before' when I said no they said they had a waiting list, this was before I had even said when I wanted to go. Seems crazy to me.

Janx, are they full then, if they have a waiting list. ready for a cancellations.
When I've been asked if I have been before, Normally it would mean that they don't have my details on the computer system.
It's becoming a tad daft.

At a guess they're perhaps up to their usual numbers of campers (rather than filling all the pitches they have a set number of campers that they don't like to exceed)
they still have some pitches "resting".
But they must have space as they have told the OP that they are" not taking any more bookings unless you have been to the site before".
Resting pitches?? I dont think any campsite in their right mind would rest pitches on an August Bank Holiday weekend. In fact i would say that if they had said that, this thread would be called 'Resting pitches on August Bank Holiday!!', and they would be getting grief for lying to you.
I do think it is a strange decision, but at least they were honest to you.

Fforest fields have a selection of all weather pitches and grass pitches as well as hardstanding. They have always rested pitches no matter whether it is a bank holiday weekend or the school holidays so as to give campers and caravanners good pitches to stay on.
They never fully book the sites, i am one booked for the august bank holiday but due to circumstances i may not be able to go but will not know until early august so they will hold my pitch for me until i can confirm for definate.
It is a brilliant site, well run with only the interest of the camper/caravanner at heart. i have been going for the last 6 years and go at least twice a year, perfect for what we want and very child and dog friendly

No don't think they were full just got the impression that maybe that they know they will get their regulars in at busy times and don't need the custom.
I did speak to someone in Buxton that was staying on that site and they said they are very fussy who they have stay there.
Funny thing was they knew nothing about me........but then maybe they got the vibes that I was going to pitch up and invite my Hells Angel pals round for a barby!
